Do you have UU like Sam Laidlow?

Great attitude he seems to have.

So sorry for him

Looks like burnout to me and body on hyperdrive not letting him recover but no idea. Will be interesting if he finds out something. Season is over if this is true

Any proof? Otherwise it’s the same as saying the other side of the moon is green and Jan Frodeno painted it

I hope the vagus nerve is the source of his issues - it’s so difficult not knowing what is causing major health problems.

Someone is in timeout for the weekend for that type of posting.

Classic reminder that we don’t do doping accusations without first-hand knowledge of the situation or a definitive adverse analytical finding.

I kind of wonder if he went so deep on the bike at Kona that his mind has almost created an adversion to going to that well again?

Doesn’t the vagus nerve control the parasympathetic nervous system, aka, “rest & recovery”? Really does seem like he killed himself leading into Kona, and maybe that bike record was the straw that broke the camels back.

More importantly what does his health condition say about the sport of triathlon?

Nothing??? You can run yourself into the ground doing any performance sport at a level where you’re pushing to be the best in the world.

What is UU??? Dr. Google has failed me.

Thanks for asking - my creativity has failed me too!

Also if Sam’s testosterone was low and he did get a TUE to get on the hot sauce would that be public knowledge or behind the scenes type of stuff???

In the video he says he has Unexplained Underperformance or something (he didn’t seem to remember exactly what the doctors said)

It sounds like they diagnosed him with a catch-all that they use when they can’t figure out what’s wrong with someone.

I love how they came up with a name for “we have no fucking idea what’s wrong with you.”

Ahhhh, “Unexplained Underperformance”, I would have guessed that one. Thanks!!!

Sam was training with Arthur Horseau (that was coached by sam dad too). Arthur also has health issue just before Kona and cannot train and race well (dont remember during how many weeks but at least 4 weeks before kona, he also say that he just cannot train “like sam”)

Maybe there were both overtrained and sam just pushing the limits and for a real overtraining you can take month to recover.

Unless the rules have changed you can’t get a TUE

it would have to be extremly extremly low to get the tue for testosterone etc
chemotherapy and not because of overtraining etc

As I wrote on Sam’s YouTube:

His experience of symptoms that day after ‘exertion’, sounds like he may be experiencing ‘post exertional malaise’, the hallmark symptom of myalgic encephalomyelitis.

The best diagnostic tool is a 2 day CPET (cardio pulmonary exercise test) – if he has ME, his 2nd day results will be significantly lower.

To answer the original question:
Do I have unexplainABLE underperformance?

I did.
Last year.

The thing I decided is that it is not just one thing.

But it’s not everything either.

Truly bad performance is usual many things combined.

This is intellectually hard for us. It’s easier to fix a single thing.

So we invent mystical all encompassing illnesses:
“Overtraining”, “rapid aging” , “post exerional malaise.”

Okay!!

But what are those things really?

A confusing malaise of several things.
