Ok guys. Time for some good dog/good owner PR. Who has an a well trained athletic canine companion? (or other pet)
I’ll start. This is Freddie, Belgian Sheepdog. She is a nationally ranked Agility racing dog. She also does sheep herding trials, competes in obedience trials and works as my handicap assistance dog on her days off.
She is friendly and social, but yes, she would chase a bike or runner if given the chance. I believe in fences and leashes so she never gets the opportunity!
My current baby sure can bounce. Short-haired Border collie. She’d jump the fence if she was smarter.
She’s a doll, and can catch anything, frisbee, tennis ball, last night’s possum climbing on the fence, ect…
I used to have a male Border Collie, he had serious obedience competing potential, but his papers never came through. He wasn’t very good with strangers. Alas, he is no more.
Good dog PR is hard to come by these days. But my kids are excellent on all accounts. This is my boy Gus, he’s a Great Pyrenees and in this picture is just past 1. He mostly believes in air conditioning and couches. We have two Border Collies as well, both are competitive sheep herders. More pictures later.
Roscoe, 1/2 doberman 1/2 redbone. He lived to be 14. While not one to compete in formal competitions, he could jump through a 5 strand barbed-wire fence without either getting scratched or breaking stride, climb 10 feet up a tree, all the stuff a good hound should. I miss him.
I have a rescued 1.5yo flat coat retriever. He is a fantastic runner, even in the warmer weather.
Last week, we were running around the lake. One of the fast locals passed us. Charlie determined to hang on. We hung for over a mile. The guy looked at us cautiously at first and then with appreciation. Finally he said, “That is one damnnn dog”.
I see a Redbone Hound posted above me. Those are great dogs.
This is Dakota, a two year old chow/husky/german shepherd mix. He was found getting his milage in on a local highway when he was two months old and came to us when he was five months old. He loves to do sprint workouts in the backyard, preferably against Chase his best friend and our neighbors dog (though Chase is not in as good of shape as Dakota). Dakota relaxes by watching soccer, cycling and 80’s videos or by watching the world go by our front window. He has a personal vendetta against all delivery people, especially mailmen, UPS and FedEx! Alas, his bark is fierce but he is only a vicious killer when a window or door is in the way, though he has done some things that indicate that if someone broke in or attacked my wife or myself he would go for blood! He looking forward to trying his paws at Agility this summer. This pic is not posed (except for the jersey, it was for a calendar) he always does that when I roll a soccer ball to him! He is the only dog I know who only shakes with his right front paw(so proper!) and high fives with both!
Here is my boy Oberon a 1 yr old golden retreiver, a champion sleeper and lap dog. He is also my running buddy and loves to swim, but his lack of opposable thumbs has limited him to aquathons.
He is also very good at getting himself and his sister Sadie very dirty, but we still love him. Look how happy he is (and how not happy his sister is)!!!
This is Simon, a schnoodle. This pic is from February when he was 3 months old, 5 pounds. He’s now a big guy at about 13 pounds with obscenely long legs. This boy can MOVE. He walked/jogged 5.5 miles today. And yesterday. And many days before that. He seems to be fearless as well. I want to get him into triathlon, but I’m not sure if a road bike or a tri bike would be better for him. His other sports include chasing birds, extreme playing, and wrestling with other dogs. He is quite an eater, which makes me proud.
Sorry he’s gone. That dog looks like it would never stop working. Strong and stronger!! Of all the pics, I’d take your’s in a race.
Just lost my 13 year old boxer. Got her ashes back yesterday. Going in an ern in the garden. Wife cannot part with her. Your dog looks like it would kick all sorts of ass!!!
My wife (who’s a veterinarian) and I have three mountain climbing pugs: Nixon, Missy and Seamus. This past weekend, the five of us summited Mummy Mountain (in the Spring Mtn range, outside of vegas), elevation 10,100 feet by my GPS. There’s still several feet of snow at that elevation, and the pugs have legs about 4 inches long, so their hike was the equivalent of a 100 miles or so in shoulder deep snow! Studs all, even my little girl!
I’m Mac equipped, so no photos to share. But trust me, they are tres chic.
