when you’re out training, or racing, do you ever get so pumped up and overwhelmed at being able to swim, bike, run?
this past weekend, in the outdoor pool, i was overcome with how beautiful the sun looked through the water. it was just amazing!
also, have been focusing more on running (along with swimming) and just so fun to trail run. it’s always challenging, but glorious to be with the trees and dirt. even some of the flying bugs are interesting. just love it!
regardless of ability, size, steed, or gear, it is just awesome to be out there.
Excellent post and it’s something I think a lot of people forget about on this forum. I got burned out as a runner in college and spent a number of years having running as something to “get through” now I enjoy it. I always make it a point to enjoy my training, look at the scenery, wave to people…no matter how hard i am going. Life and a tri career is way to short to not enjoy it as much as possible.
I think its fun but i don’t really get pumped up. Well racing i do if i do well but i haven’t had one of those races yet this year.
The last time i got really pumped up was when i layed a guy out in a hockey game then hit another kid into out bench both within 30 seconds… not that was fun.

well, i relate to how you felt about “getting through”, been there! (still go through that sometimes, actually)
it is nice you’ve come full circle, and have more enjoyment now. “more enjoyment” is what i’m striving for on a continual basis.
I almost never get burned out … no matter how much training I do. I just love it so much. I just love being out there.
I could probably be a much better athlete than I am if I could adhere to a coaches training plan. But I can’t. I can’t boil it all down to numbers and sets and intervals. I’ve just gotta get out there and take it as it comes and savor it … which is what I tend to do. That approach may not produce the best results, but it keeps it fresh and promotes consistency.
Cool post totally agree with you after the swim I am pumped because of the ability to actually see something other than murk and my arm, but I love the downhills on the bike, perfect bug in teeth kodak moment. And the run especially down trails is awesome. Thanks for bringing it up kittycat gotta love this stuff, next time out is Sun in Westchester no swim so a perfect day in store.

I get pumped up a lot when I run. I love watching the sun rise in the mornings. It makes me so happy and thankful. I feel like I could run forever.
I’ve never been pumped up swimming in an indoor pool.
Yep! Not “overwhelmed” per se but there’s always something good on my swim, bike or run.
Up till this year, I was quite focused on making sure I got the distance in on my schedule or making the right average on my bike etc.
This year, I abanonded that thinking and have been doing my swims, bikes and runs because I CAN.
And while my speed isn’t any faster, my consistency sure is! My running was always my weakest and this year, I am already at the mileage I did in 2006. It’s only JUNE! I’m very pleased with that.
I try to always find something good/fun/intersesting in my training. Could be a deer in a farmer’s field, or I got lucky and had the lane to myself or being chased by a cow while cycling, stuff like that makes it sooooo enjoyable.
Or the best part…having someone compliment me on my pacing at a race on Sunday. THEY were trying to keep up with ME.
Biggest boost I’ve had all year was that lady’s compliment.
It is awesome to just be able to be out there. Nice post KittyCat!
I kind of know how you feel. I live out in the sticks so i run and ride on roads that are very lightly traveled with lots of nature all around. I always try to make a point to say out loud “wow, thats really beautiful” at something I see while out training. This morning on my run there were a bunch of wild roses in full bloom on this gravel road, they were so vividly pink that it was truely amazing.
I feel fortunate to be able to see and experience the world the way most people dont get a chance to!
Absolutely. At my age (56) I’m often amazed to think of the things I’m doing. Amazed and thoroughly pleased that I can still do physically invigorating things. Life is good.
every Saturday morning. My longest ride of the week (sometimes my only ride of the week) starts early on Saturday morning. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to the middle of nowhere and I find myself thrilled with where I am and what I’m doing. I have a riding partner about 50% of the time, but they always get to hear me say, “What a beautiful morning. Isn’t this just the greatest way to start the day.”
I hear you. I’m not particularly religious, consider myself an agnostic in fact, but then there have been times when I’ve been riding my bike, runnng or scuba diving when I’ve given thanks for being blessed with such a beautiful moment.

Per Romans 1, one of the ways we come to know God is by His creation. I don’t see how anyone can spend time out in the countryside and not notice how absolutely EVERYTHING that is natural is beautiful and works together in harmony. The only things that spoil the beauty are things created by man. In the countryside, you can still see God’s hand. In the cities and suburbia, not so much. I guess that explains why country folks tend more to believe in God.

Yeah, I had one of those moments a few days ago in the pool too. I was swimming by myself and all of a sudden I said to myself “this is awesome” Just like you mentioned, the sun was coming through the water and I felt like I could swim all day
It was amazing a couple of weeks ago at the outdoor Oly size pool to have 45-degree air with pounding rain, mist/fog on the water and cutting through it like a razor. Maybe two other people in the pool with me…very relaxing.
