Do T d F riders pee on the bike?

In the Tour de France they are riding all day some days. Are they peeing on the bike? They sure look clean when they finish. If not why do triathletes pee on the bike if it’s not necessary?

Generally no they dont, they take “nature” breaks (this is for the main peloton on the avg. tour stage). I would assume in the break you probaly take the chance to pee on the fly, but from what I’ve been told/read, usually the yellow jersey, or top GC guys will slow the race down for the pee stops.

When I was around pro cycling in the 80’s and 90’s, it was a mix. Most guys stop altogether… as seen in the picture above. The more the merrier so the pack tends to slow/wait for everyone. Some guys will sit side-saddle coast and pee, as shown by the pic of Lance above. Depends on the race action, terrain, etc.
Almost all of the relief is happening in the early part of a race as everyone is well hydrated then. Must have been a bear in this year’s TDF with the action starting right from the go.
I’m sure it happens, but I never saw anyone piss themselves on the bike the way some triathletes seem so fond of doing.
Having said that, I did notice a rider in this years tour rinsing his crotch heavily with his water bottle… perhaps washing up after a go??

That bottom picture is creepy, “Touch me low while I pee.”
.

did you also notice how many people are taking a pic of Lance while he is peeing?

As a bike racer, I can comment. YES!!! We pee on the bike. I try to get it all out before a race, but sometimes I’ve drank just too much coffee in the morning before a race. The second pic says it best. Most times you have to pee on the fly, but if you can talk everyone in to stopping that’s better; like hell that’s going to happen if there’s a break though.

Do you mean pee ‘on’ the bike, or pee whilst riding the bike?

Some triathletes pee ON the bike (and themselves), which is pretty disgusting, IMO.

Cyclists pee whilst on the bike, but manage to do it without soiling themselves (mostly)…

In triathlon your opponent isn’t going to wait for you while you pee.

“In triathlon your opponent isn’t going to wait for you while you pee.”

That is just terrible and unethical. You have to slow down while your opponent pees. I feel that any triathlete that doesn’t wait while the other goes and recycles for nature should be banned."

And this is what happens when you have to go #2…From Zabriskie on riding into Paris

Last year on the way to Paris I had to stop in an Indian restaurant for an emergency crap. I hope this doesn’t happen again tomorrow.

if recent threads are any indication, most of it winds up in the shoes anyway.

In the heat of the race there is also some rare crapping straight into the pants going on (Ullrich had to do it one year). It’s not pretty but it’s part of the game.

Di you forget your pink pen again Master Tibbs?
What have I told you about coming to slowtwitch unprepared?
Twenty laps with a lower seatpost.

Love the old man taking a pic of Lance. A part of him appears very excited. Might be his personal “money shot”…

Ok now you’re just being gross!

For the #2 answer, google Tom Poonen and you’ll see what happens when you need to drop the kids off at the pool while racing and wearing white shorts… (which incidently is likely why it’s traditional to have black base shorts…).

As for the urination debate, in the tour, for the pack there tend to be nature breaks, or riders will attack off the front solely to gain enough time to pull over for a nature break, with minimal chasing. The other approach that works (and sometimes is employed in the breaks) is to drop back to the team car, and hold on while you pee, this can result in a fine, but the fine is worth it to stay in the break…

In normal road races, you can generally hold it (excluding Pro races). You go before you start, and then you’re generally sweating enough that you don’t need to pee until after the race.

The urination strategy also varies depending on crowds. When the Tour started in London, the riders were complaining that in the first few stages in England, the crowds were so big, and spread out over so much of the course, it was hard to find spots for a nature break…
