I put on a 55/44 instead of my current 53/39? I suspect so, just want to be sure so I dont go wasting time here…

Not necessarily. Check out http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQchainlength.shtml and see if your chain falls within these parameters with the new chainrings installed. If not, time to go chain shopping. 
What is your rear end like and what Rear Der are you running?
