Is that market rate these days?
Yup. $58 for three total hours of decent entertainment that is interactive and healthy is an OK value relative to other activities.
What would $58 do for you in a local bar for three hours with buddies?
It appears to be even more, here in Denver:
5430 Sprint (June 19, 2005):
Entry Fee:
$60 through March 15;
$70 March 16 – May 15;
$80 after May 16.
I’m all for the activity, just couldn’t remember the cost of the races I did last year.
I’m doing the race. I need to get my season started.
Heh. Denver doesn’t have anything on this:
2005 Life Time Fitness Triathlon
Individual Athletes:
Prices will increase from $125 to $150 on March 31, 2005.
Short Distance: .4 mile swim, 15 mile bike, 3 mile run
i would do it and be happy to have the legs to run!! do it!
I think $58 is around the going rate.
As far as Lifetime Fitness goes, I did it two years ago and it was, and still is, my favorite race I’ve ever done. Super fun technical bike course with lots of small rolling hills and lots of turns through some beautiful neighborhoods but… it just priced itself out of my range. It just is not worth $150 or even $125. Very disapointing
In southern California, most races cost way more than that.
Yesterday in Newport Beach, there was a sprint race (1/2 mi/12 mi/3mi) that cost $100.00 before May 1st, $120.00 after.
Just down the coast, at Crystal Cove in September, another sprint race has an entry fee of $95.00.
$58.00 is cheap.
Jeff
$25.00 for the Lake Louisa Sprint Triathlon this Thursday at 6:00 PM in Clermont. Z
I do see your point though. I guess it is a sign that I have reached middle-age (43) when everything seems expensive.
Our Sprint ( .50/12/3) is $65 for early registration BUT you get a free race embroidered DeSoto transition bag and a t shirt with your entry. Pyramid Lake tri - Reno, NV
“Yesterday in Newport Beach, there was a sprint race (1/2 mi/12 mi/3mi) that cost $100.00 before May 1st, $120.00 after.”
At least the AG winners were essentially reimbursed: TYR Tranistion bag (about $65), Nike gift card (I think $30), dinner for two at El Ranchito (maybe $30). The best haul I’ve ever received!
Market rate? It depends on your region. That race would be EXTREMELY cheap here in So.Cal where Sprint races range from $75 (Bonelli Park races) to over $100 (I believe Pacific Coast, Hermosa Beach, etc. are all over $100 now).
So…check your region to determine if rates fall in line with the norm.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that race fees are indicative of insurance costs and the local economy (of sorts)…
More metropolitan/affluent areas equal higher costs…
Agree? Disagree?
I prepaid (before the rate went up) $75 for a short, poorly organized tri this year. I didn’t sign up for anything as cheap as $58 - 5 tri’s total.
You could always get into bike racing. Here in Texas, $20-30 will get you a 2-4 hour race. $40-60 will get you a 2 day, 3 stage race. Triathlons seem a bit overpriced IMO, though not as much as 5k to marathon running events.
Here’s the rates for the local Tri sprint series here in NY:
**EARLY: before May 17 Triathlon: $60 **Biathlon - $40
LATE: **after May 17… **Triathlon: $70 Biathlon - $50
RACE DAY: **Triathlon: $80 **Biathlon - $60
If I wanna do the upcoming race, I’ll hafta pony up $70 now.
$58 for three total hours of decent entertainment
Three hours? Tom, what are you doing, going around twice?
The thing about the Life Time Triathalon is that it is not only a sprint for $125.00
You can do an international distance (1.5 k swim
, 40k bike, 10k run) for $125.00 if you want. And they also give most of the participant a free set of race short and singlet if you register before march 31st, which is worth about $100 plus a ton of other goodies we triclan people go nuts over.
Not a bad deal if you consider you get to have a great morning workout in one of the most beautiful cities in the US and still get some treats.
oh yeh the $250,000 purse is a good incentive also.
Well, there are certain things you can not put a pricetag on (one way or the other):
For the aforementioned race it would be: The other.
I wouldn’t even do this particular race if they would pay me to swim in Back Bay. If I would be racing at a venue like that I would at least expect to have a medical exam voucher and a course of antibiotics in my goody-bag.
However I would consider racing Crystal Cove, which is equally expensive and only a couple of miles away. Beautyfull venue and well worth the price.
