Do I really need to re-dish my rear wheel when switching from 10sp to 11sp?

I have a set of American Classic Hurricane road wheels that currently have a Shimano 10sp freehub.

I’m looking at a cyclocross bike that is spec’ed with Ultegra 11sp.

What I’d like to be able to do is convert the Hurricanes to 11sp during CX season then convert them back to 10sp during road season. Fortunately, American Classic sells a Shimano 11sp freehub body kit for my wheel…

However, I noticed that there is a note on that page that says “Wheel must be dished for Shimano 11 speed.” If that’s the case (it’s the first I’ve heard of it), that would make my plan of swapping the freehub body depending on the season a much bigger PITA.

Can anyone shed some light on whether this is really necessary? I plan to contact American Classic Monday. But I figured someone here could probably help me understand in the meantime.

Thanks.

Yes, the wheel will need to be re-dished for the 11 speed freehub body.

Fortunately, you can still use your 10speed cassette with the addition of an extra spacer behind the cassette.

So, re-dish it once and you’re good to go for both 10 and 11 speed.

It varies by wheel type/manufacturer, but yes you’ll likely need to re-dish the wheel to give more spacing on the drive side. However once you’ve done this you should be able to run a 10 speed cassette on the 11 speed free-hub by using a spacer.

The other option is to not re-dish and swap between a campy 11-speed freehub/cassette combination and the existing 10-speed combination. Shimano 11 speed works fine with campy 11 speed cassette’s.

Just so I’m clear…

If I went this route, I would not need to re-dish my wheel. And I wouldn’t need a spacer for either setup.

For road, I would just run it like it is currently set up.

For CX, I would need to swap on a Campy freehub (compatible with Campy 9/10/11) and a Campy 11sp cassette. That will work fine with a Shimano 11sp drivetrain.

That it?

Yes, assuming the wheel doesn’t need to be redished for a Campy freehub. That also depends on the manufactuer.

I would reccomend getting the 11spd Shimano freehub, redishing, and then swapping cassettes. As stated above, the 10spd cassette will work just fine with a spacer. That’s what I did on my wheels.

Hello The_Mickstar and All,

I had my older Zipp wheel rehubbed and re-dished by http://www.wheelbuilder.com/

You will need to talk to them as some wheels are not easy/inexpensive to rehub and re-dish including some older Zipp wheels.

As stated … once set up for 11 spd (Shimano) you are good to go for 10 or 11 speed with a spacer when needed.

Cheers,

Neal
