Do fluid trainers wear out?

The “5.5 hour Computrainer” thread got me wondering, do magnetic or fluid trainers ever wear out? I have uncounted thousands of miles on my Cyclops fluid trainer and haven’t done a damn thing to “maintain” it. What’s the life-span of these things?

They can break. My Cycleops Fluid lasted about 8 years with heavy use.

I was pedalling along one day, when the propellor detached from the driveshaft. Nothing untoward happened, it just suddenly lost all resistance.

The model I had a model, didn’t have the lifetime warranty. Cycleops told me it couldn’t be repaired but offered a discount on the new model.
