DMSO Anyone use it?

Sold as a solvent. Used on pets for joints etc, on people only for very specific conditions. I remember years ago when I played a lot of rugby, guys used it on charley horses and deep bruises with amazing effects. I’ve been having some serious cramping, strain, pain issues in my calves and have been considering DMSO. Wondering if anyone uses it and has advice re application, uses, how its helped etc.

Thanks

yes i have used it like 30 years ago, i also wrote a paper for school on it.

i am sure there is much more info on the product now

it did work by numbing the pain but i could still feel the affected area

I use it all the time in the lab. It stinks, which is good because you know when you are sloppy and drip some…in the fume hood, while wearing gloves and a coat. So, no, I’ll never intentionally use it on my body.

On horses, yes. With gloves. I’ve heard if you get it on your skin, you can taste chinese food. True story.

That’s true.

In high school the local vet would drop some off on the doorstep at night. Wasn’t legal for humans.

That’s not true, DMSO is an odorless liquid/solid (freezes ~66 F) . Poor purification or decomposition could lead to the presence of dimethyl sulfide which would give a nasty raw sewage/ rotten egg smell, but pure DMSO does not smell. That doesn’t mean I would advise rubbing this solvent on your skin anymore than nail polish remover or paint thinner though…

Rub some on your skin next week in lab then come back and attest that it doesn’t stink. A cross between garlic and rotten eggs, best part is that even if you just get it on your hands, you taste it in your mouth. I’ve used it professionally in multiple instances, veterinary med application on the ranch, and as a solvent in pharmaceutical production.

For human therapeutic application, there are far better and more proven products out there, with less side effects.

DMSO is one of the most dangerous solvents as it dissolves quite a lot of stuff and can also penetrate the skin. Given that there’s all sort of crap in the lab, the last thing you want is to have DMSO bring in chemicals through your skin. We stay away from that s*** unless necessary. I’d give it the same respect i give to chloroform and methylene chloride, and the latter two are cancer causing…

Good to know! If it has degraded over time (our bottle is certainly not recent), then it still works well enough for my purifications!

He already explained that. Pure, high quality DMSO doesn’t stink. When it degrades, then you get the bad smell. When you rub it on skin, it comes into contact with all sorts of stuff and degrades.

Tks for all the replies guys. What products would you recommend that are “far better and have way fewer side effects”. Def looking for a hardcore product, that is safe, to help w muscle tightness and pain. Self massage is certainly helping but any other suggestions are appreciated.

All the cool kids dissolve aspirin in DMSO and use it on muscle aches (poor mans voltaren gel) I’m not a cool kid so I don’t though
.

Yes, I use it. Have off and on for 30 years. I keep a jar in my home and one in my SUV.

It is not approved for human use because it can’t be patented and it is cheap so the pharmaceutical companies have no economic incentive to go through the approval process. It comes in liquid and gel form (my preference).

It has been used for many decades by runners and cyclists.

I had a foot injury and asked my orthopedic surgeon, who is a marathoner, about it. He said he couldn’t recommend it because of the lack of FDA approval … but every world class marathoner he had worked on used it.

I like to cut open Alleve gel caps … rub the liquid NSAID right on the area needing relief … then rub it down with DMSO. The DMSO takes the NSAID right into the muscle and joints.

Anyone have any knowledge of or experience using Pennsaid? It appears to be the active ingredients in Voltaren in a DMSO base and is sold via prescription. So its similar to aspirin crushed into DMSO…perhaps? David K

I’ve used it. My doc gave me a few small sample bottles to use.
Oddly enough it also leaves a garlic like taste in my mouth the same as DMSO.

Edit to add: Dang, I just looked up the price of Pennsaid and could not believe how much
it costs ($250 for a very small bottle).

The Doc told me “you don’t even want to know how much this stuff costs” so I knew is was
expensive.
I also read that in April you can buy (maybe) a generic brand.

Stands to reason I guess since its in a DMSO base - perhaps even pure medical DMSO still has the garlic effect.

Do you think it helped you?

My grandfather used DMSO and ate a LOT of garlic. He often reeked and you could tell he was in the house immediately by the smell.

Thanks.

David K

I think it’s helped some. Now that I know how pricey it is I’m sure
it’ll help even more.
