DIY Aerobar Pads

Anyone tried making their own aerobar pads? It’s not that I’m cheap - but I have a pair of Xentis aerobars that have been discontinued and can’t find the pads anymore. I bought a set of the CeeGees Xentis pads, but they’re way too small and they don’t return emails (thanks guys…)

I’m curious what material works best, and where to buy it. I was thinking maybe neoprene, but wasn’t sure what the best material would be.

hobby shop foam board and some spray adhesive to build the pads (as thick as you want) and then attach them with the double sided stick velcro.

About $10 and an hour will have you set with plenty left over.

1/2" Closed cell polyurethane foam pad and spray adhesive (follow can direction) can be found in the form of walking pads. Interlocking play mats or just as raw material. And, you may not be that cheap, but I sure as hell am.

As a short-term thing, I cut up a mousepad (actually double-layered it) and secured with velcro.

I wound up using that setup for over 2 years.

Just got CeeGees, and Oh. My. Gosh. Blissful.

Got some foam knee pads from home depot and cut them up. Much better than any pads I had before. The foam does’t absorb any water, and also never gets slippery even when pouring sweat.

I think it was these:

Thanks to everyone for the responses - I’ll post what I end up making.

I took a neoprene laptop sleeve (promo item from my wife’s job), cut it up, stacked a few layers (with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive), attached to my aerobars with velcro strips, and then trimmed to shape with a razor blade.

McMaster Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/) has numerous materials that can be potentially used for AB padding. Check out items 8785K21 and 8991K58. Both are 1/2" thickness. Hope this helps.

are you in procurement? Seems like our purchasing dept. gets everything from McMaster Carr…that and MSC

to the OP - seems like this would be a rather simple project. However, are you looking to build the rigid portion as well?

Bring this thread back to life. I have some custom arm rest and need to craft some pads so looking for the best, new or different options.

I took the insoles out of a worn pair of running shoes and cut them to fit.

After searching some of the mentioned options, I am thinking 1/2 neoprene might be a good material.

Ive bought pipe insulation at the hardware store that is 1/8-1/4" thick. It has tape on one side which makes it easy to apply

Had enough time to make something yet?

I did! But I ended up not really liking the bars so I sold them - no pictures sorry!

First iteration I glued closed cell foam cut from an old camping pad directly onto the cups. The pressure of my arms pushed the foam into the 3 pairs of screwholes and didn’t work more than half a season. The second iteration, I cut 0.060 kydex sheet the same size as the cups, heated it up in the toaster oven and form fit it to the cups. (Profile designs by the way), glued the foam to the kydex and installed with velcro. That allows me to adjust the cups if I need to without ripping off the glued down foam, it also raised my arms up about 1/3 " without adding and spacers under the cups. I’ll post photos later,I’m not where the bike is right now.
