Diuretics and Endurance Sports-ST Medical Peeps

One of my BP meds contains a diuretic (hydrachlorithiazide).

I have a lot of problems in the heat and have had several significant bonks in the heat. Not so much trouble when it is cool.

I’m also a heavy sweater. So with salt being excreted in my urine and heavy sweating, it sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I’m wondering if I should up the salt/electrolyte intake before and after a hard workout, which seems counter to my BP protocol.

It’s kind of confusing to me.

hctz - hydrochlorothiazide is loop diuretic that works by inhibiting sodium absorption in the loop of henle

youre right, about the salt intake sort of counteracting the drugs effect. as a pharmD 3rd year student, i do not believe doing this will put you into a hypertensive emergency. plus you will sweat out most of the consumed sodium.

whats your blood pressured untreated and treated?

you could also talk to you doctor about a different way of controlling your blood pressure like ACEI, ARBs, or some sort of combination therapy.

possibly the best therapy overall is to lose weight.

If I am not adding salt, maybe lots of it, because of the drug am I more inclined to have salt depletion and hydration issues in the heat.

Tried those other classes of drugs. Didn’t work.

The Lisinopril/HCTZ seems to be most effective.

talk with your doctor. he or she likely just does not fully understand your training regimine, and can change your Rx. don’t mess with trying to correct on your own with other supplements. there are all kinds of combinations of Rx docs can use to treat your bp.

i had the same situation, and my doc dropped the diuretic and switched my base Rx.

here is an article someone else posted on ST. i took it with me to the doc and we talked through it - at least the chart.

also, i started working with a nurse practitioner on my bp. it seemed like she would spend more time with me in consultation.
