Just read an article in prevention magazine that said that 1 hamburger cooked over a charcoal bbq has as many carcinogens as 1 PACK of cigarettes! I was so disturbed by this but i decided to do a little search on the web and see if other research confirmed this … well here is an quote from a cancer research article … " an 8-ounce charcoal-broiled steak may contain somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 cigarettes worth" … they are speaking about carcinogens … ahhh! I will no longer be eating from a charcoal bbq!!! Rappstar … if your out there im sorry i ruined your day … but maybe you should reconsider all that grilling!
Is there a difference in whether the cacinagens are breathed into the lungs and passed through the digestive system?
This is not news. It has been discussed for years.
Anyway you will be fine eating BBQ food and relaxing outside. Those who eat BBQ food very frequently over many years could be at a hypothetical risk. Just like smoking in fact. Having a cigarette three times in the summer at your back garden would not harm you would it ?
My grandad is 91 and has never been to hospital. He is very healhty walks everywhere and just came back from a holiday in Europe. He sometimes eat BBQ food.
So this was specific to charcoal?
yes … it is the burning charcoal that does it - its even worse if you use lighter fluid too … gas bbq’s are ok or atleast not nearly as bad.
Don’t give up grilling just yet! The problem isn’t necessarily the grill, it is cooking animal protein at high temperatures in general. This applies to anything that is charred or blackened be it on a grill or in a frying pan. Here are some tips to reduce the problem. Marinate meat with citrus or olive oil which adds moisture and reduces charring. Precook meat for a couple of minutes in the microwave Keep your grill clean removing old charred chunks Turn meat several times to prevent charring Use aluminum foil Don’t eat the charred part Oil your grill Cook on a low heat setting Choose lean cuts Make sure they are thawed Use a spray bottle to kill flames that are touching the food
Or…
As Hank Hill would say,
“I use propane and propane related products.”
Um…what problem? I dont get it…again…let me remind you all WE WILL ALL DIE FROM SOMETHING!
So, unless you want to eat Tofu in an Oxygen bar for the next life time…quit worrying about this stupid shit. oil has fat and cholesterol…that will give you a clot and kill ya. Microwave…jury is out on that…and besides, who wants flavor eh? So…cool on raw metal…dont worry about what that may do…lead, iron, steel…what ever. yup, dont want any charring on that buger or seared steak… no foil…use plastic instead…as a matter of fact, get rid of all aluminum pans (and bikes) leave the best part of the meat for your dog more oil…the marinate may not be enough to really clog your veins cook on low…especially for searing, and blackened foods… Choose lean cuts, that way there is less fat to prevent the meat from getting dry…we all love dry meat make sure your meat is thawed…tartar is much better with no ice crystals…matter of fact, raw may be the only safe way to eat meat. Treat flames like Michael Jackson at your sons 8th birthday party. Touches any meat…put it out…why are you cooking anyway? Who ever heard of grilled tofu tartar?
Propane? You a yanky or somethin’? Barbeque is cooked with charcoal or wood.
I think I’m actually worse than a yankee. I live in Vegas!
Besides, Mr Hank Hill resides in Arlen Teax. If you have something against the great state of Texas…
Jason
Propane is for soldering copper pipes…that is about it. Good for lighting my charcoal grill too…cooking…um, may as well put your food in the broiler (if you cook with gas inside too) however, after reading the inital post, I threw my charcoal grill into a quarry…and rid my home of all food but Tofu and Snicker bars…I am sure I will now get a penut alergy and die.
yes…yes … make fun … but i wasnt saying everyone should stop cooking on the bbq … just a word of caution for those who bbq their food a few times a week! i just think it is prety sick that it is so bad that they compare it to smoking and say its worse! you keep cooking with that charcoal … it is obviously good for your mental health
Um…what problem? I dont get it…again…let me remind you all WE WILL ALL DIE FROM SOMETHING!
This is true but I think that finding ways to avoid carcinogens is probably in ones best interest so as to push that date out as far as possible. Besides everytime I close my eyes I see big mean grills getting me, so you gotta do what you gotta do in order to sleep at night…
Ruin my day? RUIN MY LIFE!!! My poor grill… And my poor bottles of lighter fluid…
But… How will you cook the tofu???
But… How will you cook the tofu???
Mist it with sun-warmed alpine spring water.
While you’re at it, avoid anything that is burnt. Toast, seared meat of any sort, roasted marshmallows. Live in fear. You may die of cancer very soon.
I will boil it in spring water that is warmed by the sun with a natural crystal magnifying glass…I will then flavor it with the blood of a sparrow…I am at one with nature.
Hank is a sell out. Propane cooked meats. Disgusting.
