Display Race Wheels on the wall

I just moved into a new apartment and I thought it would be cool to mount my recently acquired Zipp 404/808 race wheels on the wall for display. They cost as much as a work of art and I think they look just as beautiful.

The question is how? I think it would be cool if I could mount a nut in the wall that I could screw the skewer into, that way the wheels would spin on the wall. Does anyone know the thread of a quick release skewer? M5? I was thinking about using something like this to screw into the wall and then mount a coupling nut or standoff for attachment with the skewer:

However I can’t find a standoff or coupling nut for an M5 thread. Any help?

Any other thoughts?

what you need is a stair shaped bracket with two screw holes on one end and a “u” shaped cutout on the other end. that way you actually lock the skewer to the u shaped end after the bracket is mounted on the wall. it will spin freely as well. its not a bad idea, ive been wanting to do the same thing with one of my collecor bikes when i finish the restoration. but i dont think the misses will think its as beautiful as i do.

i hope my bracket makes sense, it should look like this __

Not sure I understand your bracket idea. I think it would be cleaner if there was just a pin sticking out of the wall that i could slide the wheel on, or a hole in the wall that would accept a quick release skewer… that way they look like they are floating on the wall…

Why not mount the whole race bicycle on the wall. I have a bicycle for racing, and another beater for all training (bought used for under $200).

you simply need a piece of steel rod, the same diameter as a skewer, mount that onto the wall (lots of options) and then thread the end.

Another cool option would be to hang a fork from the ceiling.

did you actually do it?

personally, they would look better on a bike, hanging on the wall.

nope – not yet:)
.

I already have my bike hanging on the wall vertically, but I don’t have a racing bike. I just swap the wheels on race days. A new racing frame is the next purchase, but that is a significant investment, and I like my Fuji Aloha 1.0 for now…

That’s why the racing wheels are just sitting around. I can’t find a skewer sized shaft anywhere that will easily screw into a wall and still be long enough. How big is a clearance hole for the wheel? Will a 1/4" shaft fit? If so I think this would work: http://www.mcmaster.com/#threaded-rods-and-studs/=9rjivf
5M = .196" so I’m kinda doubting the 1/4" rod will fit. Any advice for how to get it in the wall?

So, you are still single.

Cool idea with the wheels.

I think I would go for a m5 (if thats the size/thread of a QR) nut in the wall and then one would simply put the wheel on the wall and secure it with the qr.

I bought a bike for my nephew here on ST and the rear Neuvation wheel’s hub cracked so gave him another wheel I had. The one he had is useless now so it is hanging in my office. It looks pretty good on a U shaped hanger i had laying around. I was going to put my race wheels up but did not want the kids to use the disc as a frisbee or target practice.

Well since I run a FASTENAL and hate to see someone post mcmaster(even once, so twice gets a boooo) I can probably find a solution for you. Nothing else a 5m long bolt will hold one on nicely, just not for sure what you want to mount to the wall to hold it.

Take the skewer to the nuts and bolts aisle at Home Depot and use the bolt fitter to determine the size and thread pitch.

Post pics when you’re done.

If your going to do it, really do it:

I’m pretty sure that’s Mellow Johnny’s in Austin

Hmm, I was there in March and I didn’t see that display…maybe I missed it.

Just wish that photo was higher-res, almost was my new background.

I ended up just using some 3/16" steel rod. Drilled a hole one size bigger (13/64ths) into a stud and just inserted the rod. MUCH simpler than all of that other hardware, and the wheels can just slide off when I need them
