Disney+ series for film fans - Light and Magic

Just finished watching Light and Magic, a documentary series about the movie effects company, Industrial Light and Magic. Pretty good show, especially if you are interested in how films are made, or if you grew up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and have some nostalgia for films like Star Wars, Raiders, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, etc. Over the course of a half dozen or so episodes, they follow the company from its start out of necessity to create the effects for Star Wars, through the birth of digital film editing, on through the revolution of computer generated effects, all the way up to today and the technology being used for series like The Mandalorian. Pretty cool to see how much technology and technique we take for granted today were birthed out of those efforts.

Cool! I will have to check this out. Years ago I used to ride with a gal who worked for them and we used to ride by the ILM Ranch all the time.

I was amazed to learn in Episode One that Richard Edlund, who was the lead cameraman on Star Wars, had done some graphic design work for some record labels , that he had designed the Star Trek typeface for the TV Series, and that he had co-invented the Pignose portable amplifier

I’ve been on an “insiders” tour of ILM. My mom’s old college roommate was an assistant to Gary Kurtz (one of the Star Wars Producers) and she got us in and all around. Place is amazing. We got to see the foley stage, chatted with and watched one of the editors working on Beverly Hills Ninja, saw some cool Star Wars stuff and more. (It was over 20 years ago, so I’m sure lots more cool stuff is around there now). Can’t wait to watch the show!

All I know is that Star Wars & *Marvel *are on Disney+ … anything else could be anywhere
