I am doing the half in Clermont coming up. For those that dont know the course it is pretty hilly with some flat sections. I am planning on using my Zipp disc and 999 front. These are lighter than my other wheels which are Real Design Super Sonic’s-40’s which I have torqed the hell out of. My LBS which has a very competent wrench that I trust immensly suggested that I am to big, 6’4" - 210, for the super Sonic’s so I now train on Mavic open pro’s., or I could use my brothers Ultra Sonic 60’s, or my Mavic pro open’s. I ride a Litespeed Sabre and can maintain a 23-24 avg. speed over a flat 56 mile ride.
So My options are: 1. Zipp Disc and 999 front 2. my super sonics which worry me 3. my brothers Super Sonics- see #2 4. my Mavic Pro Open 36 spoke wheels. Feel free to mix and match and all suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.
I used a disk in Clermont with no problems. I’d probably go with the disk rear and the 999 front. The SS60 would work good, too, but then you’d be stuck carrying spares for both a clincher and a tubular.
I don’t understand why you are asking this question. However, it is important to feel confident in your equipment. If you don’t feel confident with the Zipps, loan them to Kevin as they’ll get good (though short) use.
Clermont is JUST too hilly for a disk…do you think I could borrow it that day though?
Kevin, stop trying to bum equipment off of your competitors! Especially if it’ll make you faster and him slower. I’d ride the 999/disc setup myself if you can handle the hills. I am riding a Renn 575 disc and Spinergy Tilium front for the full, with 20mm/23mm F/R. The disc doesn’t really hurt you on the hills too much, and you will absolutely destroy people on the downhills. Last year in the half this guy with ~30mm dish wheels was struggling hard to pass me climbing the backside of Hospital Hill…and I blasted past him coasting down the hill at 54mph. I probably had 15mph on him, and it more than made up for any small loss in speed on the uphills.
