In my view, you’ve left the best off the list … HED. The Jet Disc is a really nice product. I’ve used many on your list and the HED has produced better results for me than many of the more expensive ones.
Also, I just bought a new disc for my 650c bike. It’s by a company called Fast Forward (out of New Zealand, I think). I’ve received it but have not yet ridden it. I’m excited to ride it, though. It seems very well designed.
i used to have a renn 575 and never had any issues with it.
i have, however, read on this forum that some people have found them pretty flexy under heavy torque.
i only rode it in triathlons and never noticed any flexing, but depending on what sort of track events you’re doing you might want to look into it some more.
A no-brainer. Go with Corima. I have four Corima wheels of different kinds (a front 3-spoke, a set of 4-spokes, and the Carbone C+ disc), and they are outstanding. The hubs are better than either HED or Zipp, and the overall construction is far more solid/bombproof.
But the best thing is the price. The fact that Corima does not have a U.S. distributor and doesn’t do the kind of aggressive marketing that Zipp and HED do means that it’s practically unknown on this side of the Atlantic, which in turn means that it so costs way less. The lack of name recognition gives you a genuine opportunity to bank on: you can get a wheel that is every bit as good as, and I’d argue better than, a Zipp or a HED, but at a fire sale price.
By the way, Corima’s customer service is fantastic. When one of my wheels appeared to have a delamination issue, they paid me to ship it to them to France for an inspection, then shipped it back to me free by 2nd day air with a detailed report (it was just a scratch), included a letter of “profuse apologies” for the inconvenience, and threw in a set of new cork pads. Oh, they never asked where the wheel came from nor wanted to see any kind of proof of purchase. They are totally committed to their product, and the experience literally redefined my customer service expectations.
I’ve had a Renn 575 in both 650c and 700c. I’m right around 150 lbs and that disc in 700c is a lot of weight to haul around on a hilly course. It’s not so bad in 650c. Unfortunately, Renn has stopped supporting 650c.
FFWD wheels, based in The Netherlands, as mentioned by another poster, are the same discs as Planet X, but cost more. Probably made in Taiwan like everything else
The Mavic is a lovely wheel, but heavier than I’d like it to be. It’s bombproof and rolls nicely but bloody expensive. 2nd hand I think they’re a good deal.
This is because yaw angles on the track are heavily biased to the rider’s left, because of the constant left turns. Two left side covers help suck the air to the non-drive side, which helps guide the bike through the turns with less rider input.
If budget is an issue, how is Corima in the mix? Especially new. At least in the U.S., they’re more expensive than Zipp and very hard to find. I think I heard that Corima doesn’t currently have a U.S. distributor, but I could be wrong.
For the money, you can’t beat a Renn 575.
But, I like my wheelcover better. Heavier, but gives me the option of running the 808 in the rear.
Just picked up a used Renn and really like it. No idea if I’ll be able to quantify any speed gains, but I didn’t pay much more than I would have for a cover and it’s a lot lighter than that set up would be. i’m thrilled with it.
Good points, Gabbiev. I’ve tended to avoid eBay, because I like warranties, but that’s just me. I would disagree on the “quality” issues, but I think that’s personal choice and a better conversation over a couple of beers.
The wheelcover is more than just a bang-for-the-buck or experience issue. Lighter would be nice, but 300-350 gms on a flat to rolling 40k TT isn’t going to be worth more than 10 seconds. That’s most of the racing I do. I’ve only been beaten by less than 10 seconds once and I still would have been 5th in my AG.
I believe Jonathon Caron posted before that a wheelcover/808 tested faster the most discs. JohnnyO, I’ve I’ve got this wrong, please correct me.
i have hed jet disc also not convenced but i am warming to it
was shocked at how flimsy it was when i got it but it is 350grms lighter than my old disc and seems to run well and i guess the wind isnt goin to flex the side of it so i cant think of any reason why even though it is only std wheel with bonded carbon that would be a problem.
as a note i am on my second one cause the carbon seperated on my first one was replaced with no hassle though.
