I’m a big fan of the Canon SD series. I’ve got an “old” SD400, and it’s been an awesome camera for the $ (think it was in the $250 range when I got it). Perfect size to fit in your pocket and I find the body/shell of the camera (aluminum) to be very durable – it just feels like a solid camera. Takes awesome pictures…from candids to macro (see macro pics in my thread in the LR “How to drop an 8” knife…"). My advice, go to BestBuy and check them out. Also, do some browsing at www.dpreview.com to find out how the experts rate them. Lastly, price shop at one of the many comparison engines on the 'net…dealcamera.com and pricegrabber.com come to mind. Good luck!
Yeah, I also recommend the Canon SD series if you can come up with a little bit more than your $200- budget. I think www.buydig.com currently has the SD600 for $229-.
I think Tom posted a review of the Pentax Optio a while back. Very versatile camera and not too expensive. Good for those of us that always think a camera on a long ride is a good idea but taking pictures through a plastic bag isn’t. They made this one so that it is actually water proof and still has good definition and zoom capabilities and such.
I’m considering a new camera and that one or another Canon (currently have an a95, previously an a80) are on the list. The color and clarity difference in the canon vs. some others we looked at was really substantial - we’ve even taken some of our shots and blown them up to 20x30 and they look amazing - all from a little point-and-shoot.
I too recommend the canon sd series. I do recommend getting the more recent models, because once you have the camera you will want to use it for more than just ebay pics. You’ll appreciate the greater pixels with the more recent “elphs”. With the sd (digital elph) series, it fits in your pocket and you can take it anywhere and still have high quality photos. I would say get nothing less than 5 megapixels.
You can get them online for much less than at the big box stores.
I second the Pentax Optio Wpi. It’s a very simple, convenient and versatile camera that takes very good pictures in all conditions thanks to it’s truely waterproof case. I carry mine in my jersey pocket when riding both on and off road on new routes and don’t have to fuss with plastic bags or cases. Can be operated single handed whilst riding but of course not around traffic!
I third the Pentax Optio. Its a great little camera…just stuff it in a jersey pocket without any worries about sweat or stuff ruining it…I dragged mine across Iowa during RAGBRAI and got some nice shots with it.
