Anyone know the main difference between Gatorade and Powerbar Perform? Nutritionally speaking.
I tried to look and was not able to readily tell.
Depending on which Gatorade you mean it changes. Original Gatorade has fewer calories, less sodium, more potassium, more carbs from sugar but less total carbs and does not seem to have magnisium. Also Powerbar has tumeric, which is probably not in a significant amount to make any difference.
Essentially not a whole big difference during exercise. The biggest thing I guess would be a slight difference in calories when planning nutrition for an event.
Gatorade is waaaaaaay more drinkable.
Gatorade is waaaaaaay more drinkable.
does that mean Perform is pretty bad?

Yes. Perform is inexcusably awful. Matter of taste, of course, but I would find it very interesting if someone liked perform over Gatorade.
Except for here on ST, I doubt that the vast majority of the excercising public can identify one over the other in a blind taste test. I remember the uproar last year when folks were bitching about Perform at IMs and then I went out and did an IM. When I tasted the free bottles that they were giving out at IMFL, I was like eh … tastes like Gatorade. I also took a few bottles out during the race and still couldn’t tell the difference between the two.
People complained about tastes, upset stomach, etc here on ST. Til this day, I still haven’t figured out what the uproar was all about. If you give me a bottle of Perfrom and told me that it was Gatorade, I wouldn’t question you. Do I like Perform over Gatorde? I don’t know. They taste the same to me
I am curious because I don’t seem to get the same thing from Perform. It has more calories, yet I seem to get less “zing” from it.
I can tell the difference in taste. G’ade taste much better in any flavor. Perform does not taste bad…just not as good as G’ade.
This thread has the nutritional info for both of those products: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=2852737

I don’t think that is the case. I got my wife (who doesn’t drink alot of sports drink at all) to try perform and she said sorry you have to drink that crap. Bottom line is Perform is horrible, especially after it gets hot. It works nutrionally wise but that is about it. Perform is the closest thing that I could imagine that cow piss would taste like.
What is the effect of increased Potassium during racing? Does it simply help with cramping, or are there any other GI effects?
As far as I know, there is little to no benefit to increased potassium, or magnesium. You more than likely get plenty in your regular diet. Sure a little top up during something like an Ironman length event may be helpful, but it is the sodium you really need. I know Gatorade used to have almost equal amounts of potassium and sodium at one point in their history (maybe 5-10 years ago?). Now the potassium is very little.
