Difference between Zipp 404 and Hed Deep?

Just wondering what the 2-3 primary differences (performance) are between Zipp 404 and Hed Deep? Thanks

if im not mistaken, hed deep is a lot deeper than the 404s, and a lot heavier
.

Jet Deep is a 90mm deep rim, where the 404 is a 58mm deep rim. The Hed wheel is just a carbon fairing glued to an aluminum rim. The zipp is a full carbon wheel.

The Zipp clincher also has an aluminum rim with a carbon section glued to it. The difference is that the Zipp 404/303 clinchers are a structural carbon section, and the Jet Deep is a thin non-structural carbon sheet glued to the rim. The overall outside profile of the Jet60 and Zipp 404 are remarkably similar, the main difference being the weight of the 404 is quite a bit less (but also 2x the price). For a rear wheel the Jet90/Jet Deep is a good choice if you aren’t climbing the Alps.
The 404 rear 700 clincher is 900g, the Jet Deep is 1130g. For reference, a RennTech disc is 1200g and is aerodynamically far superior to either. As I hope we all know, except for sprinting and hillclimbing weight is not all that relevant. I’m still breaking in my new Renn disc.

I used to own a Hed Deep. It is 90 mm deep as the poster above states vs. the 60 mm for the 404.

I have only seen this wheel as a rear wheel. It is too deep for a front. I ultimately sold this wheel after I bought a disc wheel. I have no reason to think there is a course or weather condition in which the Hed Deep would be a good choice but my disc would not be appropriate.

I agree totally, but with one exception…IM Hawaii. Apparently Jet Deeps are acceptable there? Discs are obviously not. Anyone have a link to the exact rules?

Make that no course I am ever going to compete on in this lifetime. I think you are quite right about Hawaii.

Ahh the reference to weight is more of what I was looking for. Good comparison! I did not mention it but I can obviously see the mm difference between the Zip and Hed. It sound as though in normal conditions for midwest riding there will not be a ton of performance difference for the majority of racers unless there might be 20 out and back sectionsor major hills in a 40K which is unlikely or a person was looking to shave 20 seconds off their time. I personally just need to concentrate on the free speed (time in the saddle) for now. The Heds will get me going in the right direction for what I need now.

Do you know of any place where studies have been done to compare wheels? Seems like I heard of one last year. I would like to check it out just for fun. Thanks for the info on the last post.
