Diet soda withdrawal

For awhile now I have had a two, 20oz bottle per day habit of Diet Dr. Pepper. I decided that all those chemicals, while they may not yet be proven to be bad for me, probably aren’t good for me either. Plus the artificial sweetener definitely triggers cravings.

I have gone three days now without and I am getting wierd withdrawal symptoms. I have a slight migraine and feel a little moody. It’s not caffeine withdrawal - I still continue to drink coffee and tea, and I have tried to quit those in the past as well and failed, so I know what caffeine withdrawal feels like and this is definitely not it.

Has anyone else experienced aspartame withdrawal when trying to quit diet soda, and about how long did it last? Did you see any medium-to-long term benefits to it once you quit, like reduced cravings etc?

What about cutting down slowly instead of cold turkey?

Just went and guzzled one bottle of DDP. ENABLER!

I guess I’m not doing a good job as your sponsor.

I drank a boatload of Diet Mt. Dew and quit cold turkey. I missed it and had similar withdrawal symptoms for about a week or so. Don’t miss it at all now.

Nov 15th 2009 was my first day Pop free. I was a 2 - 4 Liter a day consumer of Diet pop. Yes about 3 - 4 days in I felt terrible, Migrane, aching and felt like CRAP… it got better and after a few days was completely gone.

Long term benefit, Had no heartburn or burning burps since I stopped.

Yeah. I need to quit too. I down about a 12 pack a day at least. Plus a couple 44 oz drinks from the Racetrack or QT. I was on Diet Mountain Dew but switched to Diet Dr. Pepper.

I stopped for about 2 weeks but I’m back at it again.

I seriously don’t think I can give up my diet coke habit. It’s bad. I feel like I actually need it. I wish you luck and look forward to hearing how it goes.

Just keep drinking LOTS of water. Your system’s flushing out all the crap, so you’re going to feel crappy until you get rid of it all.

You should feel 100% better in a couple more days. Just take it one day at a time (or one hour, or one min…).

Good Luck!

Brian

I quit Diet Pepsi cold turkey and started drinking sparkling water since I missed that part the most. No symptoms. And no, I will never give up coffee, though I have cut back on the amount.

Sparkling water over ice with a lime wedge - tough to beat…
Happy New Year.

Its the caffeine giving you withdrawl symptoms. . Most sodas are loaded. If you tough it out, it will go away in a few days. Otherwise have a cup of tea or coffee to wean yourself off of it.

Hang in there; it will get better!

Seltzer water? then you have some carbonation.

I quit my diet coke habit about 6 months ago. It sucked in the exact manner you describe for about 5 days for me. Now I feel a LOT better.

Drink lots of water. Flush that shit out of your system.

Google aspartame poisoning. You will not want any more diet drinks.

I need help breaking my Mountain Dew habit - the full tilt version. I try to limit myself to one 20oz a day but I keep trying to quit all pop - regular and diet.
I keep failing. Hoping to break it in 2011. Tips for dealing with the psychological warfare of quitting?
When stress hits, and it does a lot, I turn to it.

I share your DDP jones. I gave it up last year for about 6 weeks. Withdrawals last about a week - after that I didn’t crave it. Cold Turkey is the way to go. Unfortunately I don’t like coffee …trying to switch to tea this time but there really is no substitute for an icy cold DDP.

sarcaststic comment: HTFU

serious comment: x2 to other other post about hanging in there - in about a week or so you will feel great;
.

Switch to Pepsi Throwback. It’s got REAL SUGAR, none of this fake sweetener!

I was the same, then onto Coke Zero when it came out- I’d drink 1-2 one liter bottles a day. I went cold turkey, never really felt any effects, and stayed off it for 1.5 years. I can’t say I felt any different at all existing just on water as an everyday drink. For no good reason I started up again drinking various diet sodas when my son was born, and although I kind of disliked the taste when I started again, I’m back into it now, but a little less than my previous habit.

For all those people that say you feel so much better without the stuff, I noticed not one bit of difference.
