Did belinda granger missed the rolldown?

hi,

i was chatting with a mate who did IM langkawi and he is claiming Belinda missed the roll down and her kona slot…does anyone know anything about this? My mate says she overslept or something…after putting a good show in Langkawi’s hot conditions, it would be a bummer if she would need to qualify again for Kona. WOuld there be a special consideration for her as she DID win the race?

thanks

e

Not that I would know from experience, but don’t winners automatically get the slot?

thats what im trying to find out too…i seem to recall that something like this happened to nina kraft in IM brazil a while back…
-based from the short chat with my friend, it seems that there was a discussion bet her and race officials (implying that it is not AUTOMATIC to get a slot, but you need to be present when it is awarded…or something like that)…what came about after the discussion is what im trying to find out…

The winner has to pay and sign up like everyone else.

Aw hell naw! She done did missed the rolldown!

hi- where did you get the news? thanks

Oh, I was just being facetious. I have no official information. Sorry for the confusion!

I don’t know what happened this year, but in IM Malaysia the qualifiers are allowed to register and pay before the “rolldown ceremony” - if they hare “legal reasons” (early travel back etc).

Its the only way you could do it at Ironman Busselton last year.

You HAD to pay before rolldowns started or you missed your spot.

Only those spots not taken are rolled and can be paid for.

The whole rolldown process took 3 minutes.

Don’t all the races do that? First x people pay for their slots by a certain time if they want them, then later, they know how many for the rolldown.

And Belinda won, so why would she need to go to the rolldown? She would have paid for her slot earlier.

The rule is you must be present at the award to except your kona slot.
The first year I qualified I won my age group went straight from the podium
to pay for slot. The next year was 2nd first place didn’t show so was offered
to me and again went from podium to pay line.

The OP is obviously mixing up his terminology. Don’t be such an ass. He wants to know if Belinda missed claiming her Kona slot.

I really don’t understand why they changed the rolldown procedure of years ago as it seemed so much simpler & removed a lot of the turmoil which now surrounds the slots, rolldown, etc…

Way *back in the day, *when you signed up for an IMQ event, there was a little box you checked stating whether or not you were competing for a Kona slot. As such, when you reviewed the entry list as we all do, those athletes who wanted a slot had a little ‘Q’ next to their name. The benefit of this is if at mile 23, Bob Smith comes running by you & you already know he doesn’t have a ‘Q’ next to his name, there’s no point chasing him.

The other benefit from a logistic stand point is the following morning when everyone is standing around for hours, hoping they get a rolldown, you know right off the bat whether you’re going to get one. For example, lets say the morning after the race we’re looking at the results & there are (3) slots in the M30-34 age group:

M30-34

  1. Joe Blow (Q)
  2. John Doe
  3. Bob Smith (Q)
  4. Bill Johnson
  5. Brian Shea (Q)
  6. Tom Jones

Even though I finished outside of the top 3, I know I am going to get a slot b/c John Doe & Bill Johnson already deferred upon entry. Also, Tom Jones now doesn’t have to wait around b/c he knows I’m going to take final rolldown slot.

I just see this as MUCH easier way to do things. Please poke holes in this if you disagree?

Mike, I don’t think that is exactly correct. Currently, at domestic races at least, people who win slots can register for them prior to the awards. If there are 5 slots in an age group then #1 through #5 can claim those slots. Any unclaimed slots are available at the rolldown.

The answer is depends on the races.
Having qualified twice, in different races I can tell you that, at Eagleman 70.3 the procedure was straight from podium to pay line. At Arizona last year, there was a schedule where you would sign in and pay, even before the awards. The roll down was right after this, and still before awards.

I don’t see her name on the list yet:

Does anyone know if this has been updated since IM Malaysia?

You’re a mind reader? I have no idea what the OPer was asking.

And as Sedi said, different races do it just a little different.

And whomever noted the “check the box”, they did that at IM NZ 2001, but not in the years after.

Kathy,

I talking about WAY before '01 as the races I’m thinking of were in '96 or before (I’m not aware of any that I participated in where they’ve done it since, so AZ was news to me). My point was that I don’t see why that process was eliminated as it seemed a much more effective way to manage it.

i think what’s different now than in the early 90s is that you have to register a year in advance for an IM. Do you want to commit potentially 2 years in advance for a Kona slot (e.g. in the case of IM Florida)?

A lot can happen between the time of registration and the actual qualifying race day. What happens if the person with a “Q” changes his mind? does that mean the slot goes to waste?

I was offered a Kona spot four times. Each time I was sitting in Nightmoves in Penticton drinking beer at the after party.

True story!
