I’ve got a stomach ulcer. I’ll get to the doc tomorrow. Persistent mild heartburn after eating for 2-3 hours. It came on after a half mary on Sat. To add to my troubles I was in the middle of a cold but decided to tough it out anyway. Questions:
Could the half cause the ulcer? I know that long runs can reduce the mucousal (sp?) lining of the intestine … or so I’ve read. This seems to be in line with the causes of stomach ulcers.
What do I do now? The doc will prescribe some meds, but can this just go away on its own? Should it affect my training?
Heartburn is reflux. Ulcer pain is different. You probably have gastritis. Go see your doctor. I got $20 bucks he does an H. pylori blood test and gives you an Rx for a proton pump inhibitor (i.e Nexium/Prilosec…).
If you were a friend of mine - I’d ask details about:
NSAID use
Prior GI hx
What you mean by “heartburn”?
Then I’d tell you to take over the counter tagamet for 2 weeks and take it easy…another $20 says it would go way in a few days. Don’t drink alcohol/smoke if you do either. Don’t take any NSAIDS. If you fail that - check h. pylori, switch to prilosec OTC, and get scoped maybe.
any shortness of breath?
a heart attack can mimic heartburn type pain and vice versa.
does the pain radiate into your shoulder or neck?
depending on how old you are, medical history and family medical history, you might need to go to an ER
call your primary care doctor and talk to him!
