Guys, I currently own a Trek Speed Concept 7.0. However, I made a lot of upgrades such as upgrading to Ultegra Groupset, Trek’s integrated bars, and my latest addition was Zipp 808 for the front wheel and Zipp Super 9 for the rear. I love this bike and it is fast.
But after seeing the Diamondback Andean, gosh I love this bike even better. But couple of concerns it is said to be very heavy and the fact disc brakes is the only option, I won’t be able to use my zipps on it. I also don’t like HED’s version of a disc wheel because it has aluminum rim and spokes. I had the old SRAM S80’s and they really stunk. Zipps Super 9’s are so much lighter, more responsive, much stiffer, and they really roll fast. The other thing I do not like about the Andean is the bars are not integrated like Trek’s speed concept.
My only complaint about the speed concept is it is a little plain jane looking.
Send your Speed Concept off to get painted if you’re bored with it and have an itch to spend some cash. If you look around there are some Speed Concepts out there with killer paint jobs. The Diamondback will not be faster (will likely be slower) and will probably almost certainly be a bigger pain to wrench on (based on what I’ve read).

How can you say the Diamondback would not be faster? I have read something like the “Sail effect” where covering the triangle part of the frame allows rider to be carried by the wind even though he is using less power. I think the only downfall of the diamondback is it’s weight is pretty heavy. I am again also not a huge fan of the HED Jet Disc wheel. The Zipp Super 9 is so sweet, so light, stiff and really holds speed I think better than HED Jet Disc
By the way, is there a place where I can get my Speed Concept repainted?

Don’t buy into the marketing. Check out the recent wind tunnel test of the Andean vs the P5 here on the forums. Fwiw, the Speed Concept and the P5 are peers with the P5 having a slight edge at low yaw and the Speed Concept having a larger edge at high yaw.
Hot Tubes is a good resource to have your bike painted. They used to be authorized by Cervelo (before that program was pulled) and I think they’re still authorized by Specialized.
Your thoughts on the HED Jet disc are… misplaced. If there’s a difference between the two wheels aerodynamically… when in a frame with a rider onboard… it’s probably on the order of 0.25w and I’m not sure which wheel that would favor. Also, aluminum braking surfaces are superior. There’s just no way around that. The closest any carbon wheels come, in my experience, are the NSWs.

thanks! If the HED’s prove to be as good as the Zipp 9’s may consider the Andean. 6400 dollars for the Andian with DI2 Ultegra and HED JEt disc in rear and their HED 90’s in front would be awesome
In fact, I would probably never consider a time trial bike with disc brakes.
why do you say that? The link below shows both are very similar and minimul air drag. But please tell me why you would never consider an Andean? It is supposed to be the fastest
Current 3rd party wind tunnel data indicates it’s not the fastest. Also, supposedly, it’s a nightmare to wrench on. The other thing you’ll find about disc brakes is that you have to adjust them all the friggin time. I have XT-8000 brakes on my F-Si and can’t seem to keep them quiet for more than a day or two.

Yikes! Well I don’t think the speed concept is much easier to wrench on, but at least I can have it serviced at a TREK Dealer. The Andean would be difficult to find a dealer who knows how to work on it. As far as disc brakes, kind of sounds like high maintenance like Etap battery life sucks so you spend more time charging than riding. This is why I will stick to mechanical friction shifting as I do not race.
OK so if 3rd party testing showed Andean is not fastest, then who makes the fastest? How does Trek Speed Concept fair?

Well looks like the Andean didn’t do so well at Kona and seems to indicate the bike is all hype
Yep without a test ride and seeing bike in person not willing to do it. I also don’t like the handlebar which is non integrated like the speed concept. I would have to see what more riders say as.well

The P5, P5X, and Speed Concept are likely the fastest bikes on the market.
you spent $2300 on a disc wheel without test riding it first, yes? also, do you ride around on a disc all the time? in the other thread you said you don’t race, just train…

No I do not race at all never have never will and yes I do ride my disk all the time and I don’t do it for training but just recreational writing

I’m confused why you would buy a disc wheel if you don’t race? That is not a training wheel

I am a marathon runner primarily and cycle for fun. Just like the way it looks
