Di2 synchro shift question

I set up the bike with synchro shift.

I should add that my Specialized is SCS hub spacing. Basically, I can use the entire cassette in either front chainring and I don’t get chain rub.

When using synchroshift, it shifts to the front ring on the up shift far earlier than I normally would choose myself. Is there a way to change when the shift happens?

Yes, you need the Shimano Di2 App, and then you can program exactly when you want the FD shifts to occur (which cog triggers them) and how many RD compensating shifts you want.

Yes, you can specify the shift points through E-Tube. PC and the charger, or via the phone app if you have the wireless transmitter.

I will have to look more closely on the e tube app.

I couldn’t figure it out.

There are some limitations to the customization though.
You Can’t make it downshift to a harder gear - gear ratio must be equal or lower on the small chainring. Chainring/cassette selection is limited to standard shimano. Cassette size is further limited by wether you have SS or GS derailleur (if using ultegra), 54/42 and 55/42 is not an option with ultegra FD, not sure if it’s there with the dura ace.
As for the downshifting to a harder gear, it’s really only an issue, if you’re using non-standard cassette, eg. i you hack a 12-30 from a 12-25 and an 11-30 cassette

Even if you aren’t using synchro, di2 locks out the highest 2 cogs on the cassette when you are in the small ring. Which is probably what you should be doing anyway to avoid cross chaining, although I suspect that many cyclists regularly go to the 2nd highest cog in the small ring using mechanical shifting (I know I did).

You need to have the wireless adapter in your system if you’re going to use the phone app to do it.

I primarily use semi-synchro but I changed mine, I rarely use the synchro function but wanted it to let me use more of the cassette when in the little ring as well. They’re somewhat redundant gears but I prefer to stay in the little ring vice briefly jumping to the big ring only to drop back down right away.

On my newer Di2 bike, yes. You are correct. On my older Di2 bike, there is no lockout. Full range. My specialized Roubaix is SCS 130mm standard road spacing for the chain line. Now that I see the lockout on the newer stuff and the apparent standard of 142mm spacing for road disc brake bikes, I’m not impressed.

I’m liking my older setup.

On my Tri bike I just built up, I have one button shifters. So, I’m kinda stuck with synchronshift. I don’t know how else to do it.

The lock out can be removed by “fooling” the etube project. Works even on newer Di2.

Have to specify a 53/39 front (even if you are actually running 50/34t) and 11/25t cassette or tighter (even if using a 11/28t or 11/32t)

No, I think you have to use Synchro, with just 2 buttons, but changing synchro and semi synchro is the same with the app or a computer, though I’ve always used the app.

Semi isn’t that much different, the right shifter functions using synchro and with the left you have the ability to control the front mech. It could be programmed differently but that’s probably the most common. I was only mentioning my own setup and could have left that out. I am thinking I’ll use Synchro next winter as it should be easier with gloves on.

Even with a one button setup, you could use synchro and still have control over the FD, just program RD on the extensions and FD on the brake levers - that way you Can always shift the chainring up/down. You won’t be able to change the cassette when sitting on the base bar, But in that case, just reach forward to the extensions. Only downside, is when stranding up, you won’t be able to change the RD

Here’s a quick screen shot that may help. From the main “Customize” screen, click the “Shift Mode” circle and then follow the questions through until you get to the screen that has a visualization where you tweak the synchro up & down shift settings.
