Di2 Inline Wireless Unit - EW-WU111 - Placement

On a Di2 tri-setup with a 5-port junction box:

  1. Does it matter where you plug the Wireless Unit?

  2. Will it work by stuffing it in an extension - so - between a shifter and the junction box?

  3. Where do most people put it (who don’t have stem storage or a built-in bento box)?

  4. If I only wanted to use it to tune the system using e-tube, can I just unplug a device and plug it in its place? or does the system need to be complete?

Thanks

I positioned mine externally, between the cockpit and frame. That way, it is an easy-to-disconnect single junction wire to fully remove the cockpit. Otherwise, if you ever want to remove your cockpit with a hidden internal junction box, it takes more disassembly and hassle.

It can essentially go anywhere within the system. If you’re trying to get Di2 information on your head unit it’s probably best for it to be closer to your cockpit to limit interference. I have mine stuffed into my frame in the downtube and it works just fine. My 5 port junction box is in a compartment within my Tri Rig aerobars and then a cable runs from that to the EW-WU111 in the downtube. A second cable is on the other end of that and runs to a Junction B that is within my bottom bracket area. Three cables run from this to the two derailleurs and the battery that’s mounted in the seatpost.

I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be within an extension. You would just have whatever cable you run into the extension connect to the EW-WU111 and then a second cable connect to the bar end shifter.

I have it in my single extension plugged between a brake button and the junction box. Used the smallest extension cable they had. Its a tight squeeze but works.

I think the whole system has to be connected but if you wanted to go the route of only using it for setup you could just daisy chain the system together anyways with an extra cable and it counts as all being connected.
