I just bought a new bike online. I figured there would be a few headaches without the support of a bike shop but the deal I got makes it worth it.
I hooked up the cables and battery for the di2 using the tool and everything worked perfect including blue tooth through the WU-111 adapter. I connected to the e-tube app and started the software update. Halfway through it lost connection and now is completely dead. No lights on the junction box no matter what I do. I double checked all the connections I made.
My best guess is one of the connections to the B junction box inside the frame is loose. Can I access this box by removing the crank? (I have to buy the tool) Or how do I access it? Any other thoughts on what else it could be?
It’s a giant Propel Advanced SL 1 (With the integrated seat post). Ultegra di2 2017 version, but it does have the updated battery.
Give me a call if you would like me to help . I sent you a PM.
Remove the crankset and bottom bracket.
what was the battery level when you started the update.
if if is low that can cause problem if you start updates.
The battery reference is not a bad idea. You can get it out and use it with a Junction A to fully charge it. I had a series of frustrating issues that turned out to be a faulty battery. This was the new BT internal. I never had an issue with the previous versions.
I’ve had some firmware updates go wrong that took using the PCE-1 to get an individual component re-updated.
Only mentioning for some things to try before pulling out BB to check Junction B.
SummitAK - you are probably correct - this is a current and frequent issue for some reason. Never had the issue in the past but the last bulk shipment of batteries has something going on. We finally figured it out - but a lot of frustration. Shimano support will insist that you have a loose connection somewhere.
-
unplug everything at the charge junction A accept the battery so the charger will turn on. If it does not yellow light immediately unplug and plug back in.
-
fully charge it.
-
Re-attach all the wires into the junction A (doesn’t matter which port plug). Try it again. If it does not work leave everything the same way but just unplug the battery from the wire - wait a minute - plug back in and it should work.
Thanks all. I tried plugging the battery into the junction A box and let it charge fully, until the orange light went out. Hooked it back up and still nothing, even after unplugging for a few minutes and plugging it back in. I don’t even get anything lighting up on the junction A box.
So my next step is?
-
Buy/ borrow a battery and see if that fixes the issue.
-
Buy the SM-PCE1and use it to diagnose the system.
Next I would plug your charger into the bike system and your computer after you have downloaded “www.etubeproject.shimano.com” when you open the Shimano application use Road Bike - let it walk you through the steps and see if all the components are recognized.
The program is free.

In your original post it sounded like you used the BCR2 charger connected by USB to a computer for the firmware update using e-tube project. Did you try connecting it to e-tube project again while everything was disconnected except for the battery and Junction A?
I probably should have asked this before for clarity. One oddity of the EW-WU111 is that it can only be updated using the BT app while the rest of the system can use the wired e-tube project. This can result in a strange update sequence where you may need to switch back and forth.

The first time I tried to update through the phone app, when connected the WU-111 and it prompted me to update. I just used the PC app through the charger to check/update the firmware and everything seems to be working!! Thanks for all the help, hopefully I don’t have any further problems.
