Anyone else doing this race this weekend? This will be my first 70.3. To be honest, I feel like I’m haphazardly jumping into this (nutrition, weird training cycle, etc.)… Going more with the mindset that this race will be for fun/experience/steady pacing.
It’s a great race and Chasing 3 is going to do an awesome job out there. I’m signed up for the Olympic, but you can expect amazing course support.
The forecast is looking perfect, too. Many years has been 95+ degrees and windy. Prepare yourself for some cold water, though. Last I heard is that it measured around 58-60 degrees.
Yep, I’m doing the Olympic. I have done the Half 3 times in the past, always a fun weekend. And 60 degrees ain’t that cold, Randy!
I can’t imagine the water being sub 70 with all the warm weather here in Tempe. Really looking forward to the cool temps! I’ve only heard good things about the race as well so that’s always good too.
Show Low is at 6,000 feet, so that makes a huge difference! Temps have been 50-80 there, as opposed to the 168 blazing degrees in Tempe. Or whatever it is.
I’d definitely dial things back because of the altitude. If you train by power, you may want to subtract 5-10% and ease into the run over the first few miles. Expect hell on the swim, too, because of the altitude.
Oh, it will be low 60’s for sure, pretty much always is for the race. Show Low is at 6200 feet, it gets cold at night.
I am doing the Xterra on Sunday which I have done a bunch of times. It is looking pretty warm - yahoo weather says 86 and low of only 55. That is warm for early June.
I was up in Flagstaff two weeks ago, so I think I have an idea. If it’s the same weather, all is bliss.
I did feel a noticeable difference in my breathing while racing though (30mi TT). It took me a solid 5~ miles to get my breathing under control because of the altitude. I figure the race was a good measure to see how far I can push on the bike before ruining my run though. They need more oxygen up there…
The first time I raced at altitude it was the swim that got me - I was gasping for air after the first 100m. Now I know to take the first bit more slowly.

Show Low isn’t as bad as Flag being over a 1000 feet lower but you still notice the elevation for sure.
Thus is the consensus from what I’ve heard from everyone that swims at elevation.
Question: For the 70.3… Supersonics, Attack/ Force, Gatorskins?
I am a little disappointed the new management has changed the Olympic swim to a two loop course and with AG wave starts. It was always fun to send all the men off together followed by the women. And the awards starting at 5 and being at the Pavilion instead of the school, are they planning on feeding people, because I plan on having a party at our cabin. 5:30-8PM for awards on site is a bad choice.
Is Cam Hill racing?
Is Cam Hill racing?
He is. in fact he might be staying wi us, we are good friends and both live here in Fountain Hills.
He’s a fast dude. Good luck on Saturday. I am doing the half. I met you in St George. I gave Tom a ride to his car that was parked at the res after the race.

Oh, too funny! Nice to meet you. Cam will kick my ass. I only beat him once when I caught him in the finishing chute not looking back.
It’s hard to beat a guy who does a sub 17min oly swim and throws it down on the bike. But the HIM and IM distance go your way I’d bet.

I think the last time Cam did a half he was a pro! Been a long time. I try and get him to race some long course all the time but he is having none of it. And he has really improved not only bike but his run the last 2 years. But man can he swim fast?
I’m interested in how the waves will be set up as I’d like to race Cam head to head. He’d definitely kill me on the swim, but it would be catch up on the bike and run after that. Should be a fun race!
Good luck Randy. Throw it down!
