bring it back…just saying…
I drive by that place a couple times a week, and think the same thing. That is until i remember how hard it was to do a virtual all out 10k to start the race with, then hammer the bike for about 45 miles, and have to do that same dam 10k again. IT was a brutal race, and it really beat you to shit. I talked with Greg Klein at a hillclimb running race he puts on out here about 6 weeks ago, and he said he was trying to get the old course back. Think there might be some negative politics to work out, but i would do it just for the history of it.
My question is this, how many folks today would opt to do such a brutal race? You see what happens when you put an ironman on a tough course, the masses avoid it like the plague. And duathlon as a sport is dead, so it would have to be triathletes to fill out the field to make it viable. I’m not sure there are enough tough asses out there to make it worth while anymore. Did you ever do the race?

I also found this 8 year old thread in the archives about the race they brought back for awhile. I didn’t remember that it was on again since it’s heyday in the 80’s and early 90’s. Scroll down to sojourner and desert dudes race reports, pretty much sums up what a bitch slap that race can be…
LOVE it! best part was that sand in the 10K. That was when the sport of Tri/BIathlon was the best. Yeah, it was a hard race, but so cool. When I see all these races pop up…just to make a little $$$…just saying. I so want those “Old School” races back. The ones that had beer at the end:)
By the way, do you or anyone looking in here have any of the old results from the old days? I have vague memories of what i ran and biked there, but don’t know for sure. I think i remember Mike Pigg running 32 high for the 1st run and 33 low for the 2nd one once. Of course there were guys like Souza and some other great runners doing 30+ then 32+'s i believe on the last run. And it was a legit 10k too, even slow because of some soft sand you had to run on each leg, so pretty amazing for back then.
I will put out some feelers to the old crew and see if anyone hung onto those results. Don’t seem to be online anywhere, race pretty much died before the internet took off.
I thought this thread was about new nicknames for jackmott…
.
I’d be in for it. It would be enough to make me race one more season.
actually I have them all…from 1987 to the last time it was held. If you want I can snail mail them to you?
That would be awesome, but didn’t the race start in 86"? Not really sure, but those others would be great. Dan and i talked about doing a results archive here, just for races like that, or any others people have and can scan and upload. I mean you can now get ironman results, but getting all the AG stuff from races along with the pro results that are much easier to get, that is gold.
I thought it was going to be about the bike…
that would be awesome if Greg managed to bring the DP back in its original form, including the “dirt road from hell”.
I raced it a couple of times back in the late 80’s. I for some reason have never had a good race there. I do remember one year had a great first run, came in a bit behind Tinley and just in front of Pigg and then fell apart on the bike. I think that might have been the year that George Pierce shocked everyone to win it.
I do love the bike course though. In fact I am going to be out there tomorrow morning riding it.

I opened this thread thinking it’d be about you.
Those were the days… John Tomac destroying the bike on a funny bike with 2 - count 'em - disc wheels! and the World Championship race in 1990 with howling winds and people with 1 disc abandoning the race because they could not keep their bike upright. The “Dirt Road From Hell” was equally challenging that year with the blowing sand and pebbles doing a number on anyone not running protected in a pack! And my best race, collapsing in the finishing chute with intense hip pain (bursitis) not to run again for 2 months.

Ya this race was in the heyday of duathlon, and like Zofigien, it seemed to level the playing field between the world class duathletes and the pro triathletes. If you look at the results of each of those races back in the day, it was about 50/50 finishing top 20, and any given year it could be a duathlete or triathlete winning. It really was not a great race on paper for me, but i think i did pretty good there. It will be interesting to look over the results from back then, their in the mail to me right now. Still looking for that lat 80’s race in Anaheim that was the national championships. Think Matt Brick won it. Keep your eyes out for that one Mike…
Did my fastest ever 10k on that course!!! And those little bugs that would stick to your sweaty body…Those were the days…
I remember that big dude, he was 6’5" or so,George something…???
bring it back…just saying…
x2.
i would love to give it a go.
tthis is from 1991. On a cold windy day, buy Kenny could care less about the cold
.
in 1991 the bike course was rerouted because the wind brought down electric poles on the course. I still rode it with a J disc because I left the regular wheel at home back in the OC
That 2nd shot of the mens leaders is great. Looks like Matt Brick out front, Jeff Devlin behind him, Benjamin Parades next to him, and can’t tell who the others are. Is that the Anaheim race? Still looking for results from late 80’s(maybe 87 or 88) where i got top 10 i believe and made the USA duathlon team. I ran my lifetime best 5k at the beginning, but was still 45 seconds down from the leaders. It was an 11 turn many looped bike course, so i made up a lot of ground on the field, think i was maybe 3rd off the bike. Don’t remember the last run, but held on and beat a lot of duathlon specialists. But the memory of that day is so faded, I shirk to say what really happened, so need the hard results to keep me from telling any more lies…
Great pics…
