Mrs saskrv and i will be in Denver Aug. 18-26 approx. and was hoping for some info on master’s swimming, places to eat - local haunts and favs and any other insider info. Mrs. saskrv will need to fill 3 days while i attend a SPSS class, so places to see, sights and other ideas are most welcome.
Any suggestions on accoms would be great - I’ll be on S. Colorado for course and i think we will stay downtown. Ideas?
I live in Downtown Denver. For master’s class, check out Denver University. For running, there’s Washington Park, a great 2.6 mile loop where tons of people run, but it’s never too crowded. Outside of Denver, there’s all kinds of great trail running.
Restaurants – Black Pearl (www.blackpearldenver.com). Rioja, Sushi Den, McCormicks, Jax, Alto, Table 6 are all good as well. There’s a cluster of them in Larimar Square, which is in the Lower Downtown area (otherwise known as LoDo).
For sights – If you’re a baseball fan, it’s really easy to get good seats to see the Rockies play. If you’re not affected by the altitude, make a trip up to Breckenridge to see a great mountain town (Vail, as a town, is incredibly overrated).
There’s the obligatory trip to Boulder as well.
We have a ton of Denver / Boulder people on the board, so you’ll get lots of ideas from various posters.
There is also the athletic club at denver place (i think that is the name). Spinning classes and you can pay to have a day pass. Walking distance from any of the downtown hotels. There is also a Ymca, but I don’t know if they have a pool or spin classes.
If you want a nice outdoor swim here’s where I go. http://ci.golden.co.us/Page.asp?NavID=513 There is a nice lap pool that isn’t usually crowded during the day. It’s about 10 minutes west on Highway 6.
If you have time to get to Boulder, go for a trail run and then walk down pearl street and there are tons of restaurants and things to see. A run on the mesa trail is a must do. http://www.boulderrunning.com/wtr/wtr-route.php?route_id=5 The hike to the top of the first flat iron is awesome too. The trails are well marked.
Katie Luellen is one of the DU masters coaches and a wicked cool person. shoot her an email about being able to drop in on the sessions. She owns http://www.bodywellmassage.com/index.htm If you need a massage therapist, she’s the one!
Cherry Creek mall is overrated
Tattered Cover is not
I really should visit Boulder or like area while there, but not sure if i will. As for the running, looks great, but not able to run now - Aug. i don’t know.
BEST RESTAURANT IN AMERICA – Lucille’s Creole Cafe. Fletcher just opened one up near Wash Park (Previosly mentioned running route).
OTHER REALLY GREAT RESTAURANT – Brother’s Bar next to REI – Jack Kerouak actually wrote about this place. It has the best jalapeno/cream chees Buffalo burger in the world.
That’s what I like about ST. I live in Golden and didn’t think Splash was anything more than a kids play pool…
If you need a bike while you are here Golden Bike Shop rents Felt road bikes and Elsworth, Felt, and Intense MTBs. As well as many trails to run/ride right out of Golden. Big Ring Cycles in Golden has a a bunch of nice bikes (LOOK, Cervelo, Pianrelo etc) but I don’t think they rent…
Well training seems to have been pretty well covered, so on your down time you might think about checking out the new Denver Art Museum, if not for its collection, than for the new building. It was just completed and designed by Daniel Libeskind, who is the architect who won the commission to build the new World Trade Center. They also have one of the formost collections of Native American art, so if you’re into Native American textiles (and who isn’t), then this is the place for you
We could go to LA, but Denver works better time wise - this is actually work related. Not much other choice and besides, i don’t have a care to go to LA. So we’ll make do. Thanks.
