Deer hunting season sucks

Here I am, a non hunter, in eastern rural Ontario where the deer hunt is a huge thing to many locals and out of area hunters. For two weeks these guys are doing some “male bonding” which means huddled together at nights in a cabin while snoring, farting, not bathing and drinking heavily and they think the two weeks of the deer hunt are the best two weeks of the year. A few of them might even bag a deer. I just don’t get it.

What really sucks is that I dare not go for a run on the nature trials with my dog for fear of being accidently mistaken for a deer. It’s just not safe to go into the woods. Guess it’s a ride on the trainer today.

I hate this time of the year.

That must suck indeed, I feel for ya.

“Farts are funny”

…especially “Atomic Farts.”.

It’s started over in my neck of the woods too. It’s kind of awkward riding by men with guns, that are dressed in camouflage, while I’m wearing spandex.

Don’t give 'em anything to shoot at.

I can understand your perspective.

Being a hunter and a triathlete and avid trail runner, I am happy to forgo to weeks out of each year so that hunters can take over public land for their hunting endeavors.

Here’s a few things that you non-hunters may find interesting. I never hunt public land. Too many drunks sitting in the woods with loaded firearms shooting at any noise they think could be a deer. The last time I hunted deer on public land was in 1988. It was raining that year. I found a spot in some brush under a tree net to a gully. I deer ran down the gully and I swear there was someone behind every tree every 25m of the gully. It seemed as if I was in a combat zone and my choice was to duck further into the brush behind the tree to avoid getting shot. One shot sprayed buckshot all around my cover.

We have public land not open to hunting. I’ll run there while hunting season is on. I continue to take my dog, but, we both are wearing our orange as there are often poachers roaming about.

The key in Michigan is that there are more hunters than trail runners, triathletes, etc. I’d just as soon keep these people content and not ruin their hunt by cycling or running through hunting lands and get a number of complaints that could lead to some type of reactionary legislation that would ban trail running and mountain biking.
