So, with all the “talk” about dog and shark attacks, has anyone been attacked by a deer? I was
yesterday, well almost. Running with my dog along the path between
Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove and the Monterey Aquarium, we were stalked then chased by a
deer. Of course, I had to put myself between the deer and my dog (not
a very manly dog) while “tourists” took pictures of the deer, and me and
Riley tried to escape. You should have seen the eyes on this deer,
freggin possessed it was! I had one lady in a car yelling “don’t turn your back
on him!”. After about five to ten minutes of this, a
few passerbyers got out of their car and blocked the deer as we made
our escape through the residential neighborhood. A few blocks down,
we made our way back down to the path. Saw one of the people that
helped us and he said the deer eventually followed us into the
residential neighborhood. Luckily, we did not encounter it again.
Damn deers! Freak, that’s the most danger
I’ve had with wildlife, and we run at night in Fort Ord (full of coyotes and a few mountain lions) and swim in
the ocean.
I was hoping Martin C would be around with his Red Ryder BB gun!
Yes–I was doing a cross-country race last year about this time. I was blind-sided by a deer that jumped over a bush and smacked right into me. I saw it out of the corner of my eye and threw up my left elbow, which deflected the impact enough so that it didn’t knock me over. It did leave a raw spot and bruise on my left forearm.
I’ve been chased by turkeys as well, peecocks (spelling?) as well, but the worst was coming up on a bear. Luckily I was very close to a friend (100 yards up river) and the rest of my dogs and his. The bear slightly approached until all five dogs came to my rescue. It was an amazing sight to see a pit bull, rot, wolf/malamute, samoyed, pit/queensland heeler (spelling again :)) stand off to an animal of such magnitude. I love running with dogs because it typically keeps other animals away. Unfortunately, not always.
I’ve run there several times when visiting my fiancee’s family. The deer out there, especially the ones on the Pac Grove golf course, are pretty fierce. They have NO fear. They just mozy along and eat all the iceplants.
In high school, I ran a XC race that took us through some woods. The trail was only wide enough for one runner. I didn’t see it, but a deer decided to hop across the trail (guess he got spooked). He nailed a kid right in the head and knocked him out COLD. Kid said he never knew what hit him.
I don’t know if it was chasing me, but years ago I was running at night and heard a ‘clomping’ sound behind me, turn and saw a deer coming right at me. At the last minute, he turned toward a 6 foot chain link fence and cleared the thing without missing a stride. I’ve seen the damage those things can do to the inside of a car when they get hit, I wouldn’t want any part of being attacked by one.
I was chased by a goat when riding last week…not nearly as fast as the deer.
We have chickens along a bike path as well as roosters. Scared the crap out of me every time cuz I’m convinced they are going to run in front of me. How hilarous would that be? “I got taken out by a chicken so no IM for me.” Now that would be embarassing.
I came within 6 feet of getting clobbered by a deer at one of my favorite parks for running. There have been spottings of bear and cougar there as well and I almost peed myself because it was the brown color of a cougar. I cut my run short that day because I was so freaked out. No dogs allowed there otherwise I’d make my heeler come with me.
I was told Aussie shepard/Lab mix when I got him. Most people think either cattledog or blue heeler instead (or dingo, he’s been called that many times). I really don’t know though.
Cattledog = Blue or Red Heeler. I have a purebred Blue and the markings on the body are very similar. And, I’m not convinced that she will take on something big, all talk and no action.
I’m always afraid of hitting a deer on my bike. Last week I was out for a ride and in the middle of a descent at 30+ mph I had a deer jump across the road about 50 feet in front of me, scared the crap out of me because I was afraid that others might be behind it ready to follow it across the road. I rode my brakes down the rest of the hill…
If he has a small white patch on the top of his head thats called the bentley mark and shows he has a fair amount of heeler in him. Smart dogs, love my red heeler.
