Decent knock offs

So we were looking at Toblerone before Christmas and decided to try the “Suisse” bar. It’s about half the price.

Not gonna lie, it’s no Toblerone but it’s pretty damned tasty.

“imported from Switzerland”

i was just there (an hour flight for me, nbd)

the Suisse bar was nowhere to be seen and i was in newsstands, grocery stores, and other places it might have washed up. Fair enough if it’s tasty, but it’s like Victoria’s Secret of London, which had origins in Ohio.

I’ve found the green peanut M&Ms to be similar enough to the blue peanut M&Ms that I don’t mind the difference.

Over the holidays I caught up on Peter Santanello’s YouTube channel. He spent some time in Switzerland a few months ago. His Swiss host mentioned Toblerone is no longer solely made in Bern as it had been for over a hundreds years.

Here’s a CNN article from Mar 2023 that reviews this:

https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/06/business-food/toblerone-packaging-matterhorn-swiss-rules/index.html#:~:text=Toblerone%20bars%2C%20sold%20in%20over,some%20production%20out%20of%20Switzerland.

And I just examined another box of Godiva “Belgium” chocolates gifted at Christmas made in US.

Green ones are the home runs though.

(Showing my age with that commercial reference.)

Walmart is selling knockoff candy bars. Their version of KitKat is made in Turkey and costs half of the real thing. Definitely tastes different, but not in a bad way.

Kraft makes a chocolate hazelnut spread that is better than Nutella. No palm oil and tastes as good. Better for the environment

Wegmans brand everything is close enough to the brand name it’s modeled after that you’d never know the difference.

Their new Bettergoods brand line? I’ve been trying them out lately and they’ve been coming out with some decent stuff under that line. Most of the Great Value stuff I’ve gotten before is total shit, though.

I bought some of these for me, but for the rest of the family on Christmas morning only the real Toblerone will do. For me this is a pretty close substitute. I particularly like their raisin/ nut version.

The Kroger brand items especially in the private selection or simple truth lines have been getting better and better the last 4-5 years. I find most private selection branded items are better than the national brand usually at a lower price.

Modified vegetable oil is better?? (Transfat)

When we were in Switzerland we ate a bunch of chocolate I had never heard of. They were all pretty tasty.

Chocolate is like sex - the worst I ever had was wonderful.

No, it was Great Value. My wife tried the GV version of 3 Musketeers and she was not impressed. I did try a BetterGoods dark chocolate bar and it was nice, but certainly not as nice as Ghirardelli.
