I’ve heard that someone racing the sprint at Luray today died after completing the swim.
I don’t know any other details, but I say a prayer for him and his family. Its tragic to hear when we lose someone from our triathlon community.

Yes, that was my friend since third grade, Christopher. I’m trying to find anyone who was there with him so I can tell his mom. She’s devastated and had to drive from DC to identify him today. If anyone can give me more info, I’d really appreciate it.
So sorry to hear. Bump so you can get more info.
I don’t know what “bump so you can get more info” means. New to this forum.

When someone replies to a post, it “bumps” the thread back to the top of the forum, and thereby making it more visible to members.
Condolences on your loss. Very sorry to hear about it.
Means to put back on top of the forum column. Again so sorry for your loss.
I was there watching and heard the paramedics say someone had a heart attack in the swim. I was thanking god I saw my husband on the bike. Was hoping that when I checked the posts here tonight I would see some good news regarding it. Prayers going out to his family.
I’m so sorry about the loss of your friend. It’s devastating news.
He was there with a triathlon team (Team Z). Perhaps if you can find a way to reach out to the head coach/organizer, he may be able to share details that can help his mother.
Again, I’m so sorry and my heart goes out to you.

I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. I was at the race Saturday but not Sunday, and I used to be a member of Team Z and remain friends with many of them. If you want to connect with a coach, email me at dawninus@gmail.com and I’ll try to put you in touch (I won’t share their addresses here for privacy). My condolences.
Christew.
Please get in touch with Coach Ed (coached@triteamz.com). Nicolas

I’m sorry for your loss. I am not sure what additional info you seek but can add this: He was in distress during the swim as reported by two other athletes as they exited the swim. He completed the swim but had an unnatural color upon exit, where he collapsed.
Thanks everyone. I’ve received some private messages and talked to a teammate. Forwarded that info on to his siblings, who will filter for his mother, who’s quite frail.
For all its worth years later, I was there when he died. I wrote about it because that’s my way of coping. I posted it on my site if anyone is interested in reading it. That incident was a major influence on my pursuit of medical school and I don’t know how hard something like this might be for a mother to read about her own son, but I guess use your own discretion on whether or not to share it with her: http://graysoncobb.com/medical-school-personal-statement/

Hope his family will see this and realize that something positive came out of his death. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, that was very moving. I did pass it on to my wife who is a pediatric nurse.
Thanks for your post, Grayson.
I, too, have been a part of such a scene. My wife and I were within a quarter mile of the finish line of the Beat The Bridge, an 8K race in Seattle. I did make it to the drawbridge before it raised, and stopped those who hadn’t run the first 2 miles quick enough. But, then, we walked the rest of the race, since I was having foot pain, which would be diagnosed as a calcaneal stress fracture a few days later.
As we walked, we could see some commotion up ahead. And, then, I saw him, a man lying beside the road, with a couple of people kneeling next to him. I sprinted to him, and found him cold, gray, pulseless. Paramedics, AED; I don’t think that he made it.
We made our way to the finish line, picked up our medals… and wondered who was there to meet him. I think of him often.
My wife and I have been volunteering at the medical tent for Kona IM - I’m an IronDoc. We’re going back for our third year this October, after having skipped last year to run the Portland Marathon. (Shoulda gone to Kona!) If you get a chance, that’s a great way to use your training in medicine to serve the sport. And, I’ve found it a great way to keep the inspiration (and perspiration) going for my own health and wellness.
All the best in your training.
Thanks for you all’s comments. I wish things like this never happened in our sport but I guess that’s just life
