do people on here have days off? or do some people just train 7 days a week?
Some of us just post here seven day’s a week. Same workout sorta, Whew, Between this and the cover your ass post I just did a brick.
I usually train 7 days a week until my body tells me it is time for a rest day. It’s not very scientific but I’ve done programs before that required a specific day off every week and I find that I respond better to the “take a day when you feel you need it” method. This is usually one day every 3 weeks or so. However, I do schedule easy days where I do some lower volume and intensity training instead of sitting out the entire day.
I get cranky and feel “lost” on days off, so I go real easy in the pool instead of taking off… sometimes if I’m wrecked I’ll take a day off though
if you schedule easy days in your schedule, an easy 30 min spin or 20 min run, you’ll probably find that you don’t need a complete day off every week. Sometimes going 12-16 days straight does wonders for increasing fitness. you can’t beat consistency.
Rest is a very important part of training
Generally speaking, the event/discipline you are training for will greatly dictate your schedule
In my case I only need to train 5 days a week, my longest race is 40k and the occasional 56 mile TT (1/2 IM relay bike split)
But my training is 5 hard days of high level riding
For IM distance and multiple disciplines you may need to train 7 days a week to get all your workouts in
.
while i’m not elite by any stretch, i plan to train every day and figure that my schedule (or girlfriend), will force one (or two) off days a week … i just pick up where i left off … as my volume goes up in the future i figure i’ll stick with this plan for max flex and min stress over “missed” workouts …
I need days off. Took one Sunday. Felt really good. Days off are when you get stronger.
Exacto! I try to train every day - knowing full well that life, job, condo renovation, etc. will force me to miss days. I probably average 5 training days a week. And almost never get more 8 or 9 in a row.
If I had total mastery over my schedule I’d train 7 days on with rest on 8th. I find the quality of my workouts to improve dramatically with regular rest days with no drop off in fitness/performace.

I usually take Mondays as days off and get a massage to workout all that lactic that has accumulated from either racing on the weekend or hard weekend training. My legs are normally fatigued on Monday so it just makes sense to fully recover before resuming high intensity training. And if my legs are really sore on Monday, I have been known to take Tuesday off as well. I have managed to stay injury free this way. You should plan days off to fully recover. This is when you gain fitness. You can’t fully recover without days off; especially for us athletes that are over 40 years old. It just takes longer at this age. Unless of course your Joe Bonness.
Monday is always off. Good mental and physical break.
I swim Mon, Wed, and Fri with no other workouts. The swim days are my rest days. Every other day is extremely hard.
Rest week every 4th week. Rest week means about 8-9 hours where a regular week ranges from 15-18 hours depending on where I am in the periodization.
mondays are also good to take off because all the fatty slackers who take off Tues through Sunday decide “i’m going to workout every day, starting monday” … then they proceed to clog the pool, the gym, etc, as throughly as their arteries.
heh … i’m bitter … heh heh.
I’m on an online coaching program and monday is my day off although sometimes I’ll swim other wise wed and thurs and sometiimes tues are very hard and sat and sun are long and usually very hard so the rest days are very welcome. rest days are the periods when your body can recover and repair and build. Sometimes I’ll have a 1hour recovery ride keeping my hr below 100 which was hard when I started but now I really enjoy them(smell the roses type ride) and go faster with hr in the 80’s.
