…he has more than 2 kidneys!
(from the front page article)
“I had stress fractures, shin splints, all my kidneys shutdown and I was urinating blood.”
Yeah, I thought that was kinda funny too.
That article moved me to yet another level of respect for SEALs and particularly for his physical endurance capabilities.
However…
describing a static line jump from a tailgate aircraft under five grand as “kind of violent”? Come on, dude! That’s the cushiest jump you can make!
He’s impressive and inspiring.

"If not, who knows, maybe I’ll come back and be a professional triathlete. "
Did the interviewer not have access to pink font, or is my sarcasm detector busted again? He said earlier something about “redlining” for 8-9 hours that indicated to me that he didn’t overestimate his capabilities by this much.
I almost definitely need to have my “awww” reflex checked… somehow it triggers for babies and baby animals and various baby animals cleaning/guarding other baby animals of differing species etc… and it never triggers for people participating in events “for” some cause or group.
I think the majority of the Spec Ops guys, Marine Corps, Army Navy and Air Force have exceptional physical abilities, but their biggest strength is their mind. The mental fortitude is pretty amazing. I think Goggans actually had to go through two or three cycles of BUDS before he graduated to become SEAL. Pretty tough dude, but all the SEALs that I have ever come into contact with were each tough in their own ways.
Is it just me, or he sounds a little cocky? I don’t think he was being sarcastic when he mentioned he could turn pro. I also got the impression he thinks rather highly of himself.
People who actually are that physically gifted and know it, if they answer questions truthfully, will appear cocky.
=)

It aint cocky when you can deliver.
I think he has seen the result of his hard work and has the confidence to become a pro. There are alot of ‘pros’ in the triathlon and some of them are just a tad faster than alot of age groupers. So, for him to say he could be a pro, doesn’t really hold much weight for me.
I am curious though, him at 280 lbs. was he a jelly belly or was he some kind of weight lifter freak?
An 11.5 hour ironman is delivering? I’d hate to see what would happen if things hadn’t been delivered. How did he compete at Kona… I’m willing to bet he didn’t qualify through the standard process?
I wouldn’t call someone that does an 11:24 and trained for an event “physically gifted”. Even the Batchelor would have kicked his ass if he was racing!
we don’t know if he is physically gifted, we don’t know if he was racing or how hard he was trying or what he could do if he trained for ironman instead of ultra-runs

SEAL, Top Ranger, AF Special Forces, three tours, 2nd in the Ultra race, looking like a Chippendale and you quibble with 11.5 IM?
There are times to say nothing, and this might one of those times for you.

It said somewhere on his website that he was a powerlifter…
Okay, okay, I see this thing turning into something it doesn’t need to.
I see your point about the ‘feel good’ stuff involved with Ironman, but the real reason of my initial post was to point out the fact that David Goggans has more than 2 kidneys!
He didn’t qualify, he was given a military slot.
Here’s an interesting blog post where Goggins and some runner from New York get into a “spat” of sorts.

As the guy who interviewed Goggins, I want to make it clear he was being sarcastic about racing as a pro triathlete. It was only his second triathlon to date, his first one being the UltraMan two years earlier. He has no grand illusions when it comes to racing tris…
I have two additional interviews with the other two SEAL jumpers from Ironman that I can post if you’d like to read those too? Show of hands?
Naw, he’s not cocky. The guys in SOF are just really confident type-a guys. I love working with them, and will definately miss it when I move on. We’ve got them all: MMA fighters, Ironman athletes, marathoners, long distance cyclists, etc… We’re all just really sure of ourselves.
post 'em!
Do you have any interviews with any of the other military men or women?
11:24 is a pretty good time, imho. Conditions were tough this year, and he did Mont Blanc 100-mile ultra race just three weeks before Kona. Even at his level, one doesn’t fully recover from Ultra in 3 weeks. This is bad ass in my book…
