I’ll be doing my first IronMan at IMLT next September.
I’m thinking about springing for one of Dave Scott’s IronMan Training plans.
Has anyone used one of his plans?
What are the positives and negatives?
Are there better plans out there?

Bump as I am looking at a Dave Scott plan for next year. Anyone?
I can’t answer the question about Dave Scott’s training plans because I have never used one. What about your background? Maybe some information might help the readers guide you where you want to go.
I bought one of his iron-distance plans but it doesn’t start until February so I can’t comment (looks to be slanted more towards the higher volume) but here’s a bump for this thread. Someone a few months ago commented about using one of his plans and liking the plan and the result.
First things first… Did you get permission to use “The Man’s” proper name on this forum???
Maybe not helpful because I haven’t used Dave Scott’s but I recommend the half and full ironman training plans from Matt Fitzgerald. I have used both and really enjoyed how he balances speed and endurance workouts throughout the week. You can find them on Training Peaks as well
I purchased the TrainingPeaks Dave Scott plan for Ironman Az in a few weeks. Great plan, well thought out, informative. It is difficult for me to follow completely because of my time constraints during midweek. Good rest periods, and many training tips. I found it worth the money.
Has anyone used the plan after having used a personal coach? I had a coach last season (before I had to stop due to injury). I’m training for IMLP next year and just can’t afford the expense of a coach anymore, so looking for other options. Thanks.
Coaches can add some personal adjustment to a plan, but there are many good plans. The motivation factor is nice with a coach if you need that. Find a good group to train with helps too.
I really did like Dave’s plan.
I used his Silverman long course training plan for Silverman '09 and IMC '10. Main features: 1. quite a bit of running(40+ miles per week depending on your pace) 2.Limited taper as compared to Mark Allen’s writings . 3. Similar to Jesse K’s critical volume. 4. Swim volume was around 4-5 hours/week. 5. My best 2 finishes in 8 IM’s. 6. Maybe too much overall volume for some athletes, especially those doing their first IM with limited previous volume. 7 Includes challenging bike-run-bike and run-bike-run bricks during last 8 weeks. Highly recommended for experienced athletes, but would be very cautious for first timers. Hope this helps!
I heard from a friend that he only charges $300 to sit down with him for an hour and build out a customized plan. I would do that.
He does have a $300 consultation, and will discuss whatever you would like. BUT, he does not give you an entire plan for a race in an hour.
If you like, he would give you a plan and certain training sessions to work on for 3-4 weeks, but that is it. He calls it a micro-cycle…you would have to get another consultation to keep going…
I like his plans, and his heart-rate zones. I agree with poster above that his plans can be intense, and the beginner would have a tough time doing every session.
Gotcha. Thanks for chiming in!
Bumping an old thread…same question…
