Dara Torres swims a mean 50 free. and she’s 41. and she looks fantastic. She’s aiming to be at the olympics, and if she does, she’ll be the oldest swimmer ever at the olympic games. We women ROCK!
She swims down here in FL. Great girl. She always takes the time to speak with the kids swim team, my daughter loves her. I think my son does too, but he is 15 and well…
The article seems to say that she has earned the money herself:
“Nearly everybody I spoke to for this article struggled to find a way to say gracefully that Torres’s considerable financial resources — sponsorships from Toyota and Speedo; money she has earned from modeling, TV work and motivational speaking; plus a private sponsor for training expenses — are helping her gain speed.”
Of course, during the course of the article you also learn that her mother was a model, her father a real estate developer, and that she grew up in Beverly Hills…
the three women stood on a podium. A college kid hung a silver medal around Torres’s neck. “Can I see it?” a high-school swimmer asked Torres after she stepped down.
*Torres does not relish coming in second. “Sure,” she said. “You can have it.” *
i dont buy it for a minute…she has a personal best in the 100 free at 41…that doesnt happen to lifelong world class swimmers…that did happen to barry bonds and we know that story…do you really think lance could out perform his prior peak at 41???
i am amazed by her…i love her spirit and she is an american media darling…but i dont think the international media is going to avoid asking questions…
never seen a woman with abs like that expect on the front of muscle magazines who are on GH…
I hope its not true either, but (and I’m not bragging - just proud) my 38 year old wife has total 6-pack abs like that. She is totally clean, though she eats some weird-a$$ stuff. And yes, I’m jealous.
She qualified for tomorrow (Friday) night’s final in the 100 free. Might make that Olympic team afterall…\
She’s pretty much a shoe in, since they will take the top 6 or so from that event to fill out the relay. With her swim today, I would say she has a way better than average shot at that, and so far it looks like she has a better than average shot at actually making top 2. She should be tough in the 50 also, her turns are horrible, classic old school. In the 50 she will not have that disadvantage.
The questions were definitely there for her first comeback too. To Dara’s credit, she asked to be put back on the testing lists shortly after a good masters championship gave her an idea that she could still hang with the kids, and has not only asked to be tested more often, but has asked that part of her samples be preserved so that they can retest them when they learn how to detect whatever’s getting past the usual tests at this time.
