Wow, I just read that after the big crash with Richie Porte, Dan Martin actually did the rest of the TdF with a busted L2 and L3. How is that even possible. These guys are unreal:
How lucky did Froome get with Porte crashing out, Martin breaking his back, Aru getting sick, and Dumoulin and Quintana leaving their legs in Italy? Plus Contador hitting the deck almost daily for around a week (not that Contador would win, but he may have been more of a disruption guy)!!!
Most likely it’s a fracture of the transverse or spinous processes of the spine. Nothing dangerous but painful. Good possibility of some pain killers and or a lidocaine shot to help.

Yes, article said transverse. However you cut it, forget about getting back on the bike for normal people and then chase Froome around half of France for the next 10 days. Its unreal!

Sure Martin is probably the unluckiest as his crash wasn’t his fault, but Porte’s wasn’t luck for Froome it was poor skills from Porte. And fitness/health is all part of a 3 week grand tour.
I think Froome went off-roading at least twice during the TdF. A misplaced camper van or fence might have changed the outcome for him. Luck has a lot to do with it.

Froome doesn’t need to get lucky. He just happens to get a magic mechanical everytime he is in trouble & then invokes the unwritten rule of the peleton. However, when Dumoulin shits his bibs in the Giro, its game on.

Didn’t have a high speed crash due to lack of skills?
Managed his health correctly?
Seems he’s either really good, or has been really lucky for 3 weeks 4 times…

For what it’s worth Dumoulin didn’t have a mechanical. For me getting sick is your fault and lartnof managing yourself and nutrition etc.
A mechanical is something else altogether and the same thing would have happened regardless of who was in yellow.

I think we can all agree that Froome got lucky in the same way Nibali got luck in 2014. With Froome and Contador crashed out that year, Nibali had less threats. I agree that it takes a ton of skill to stay upright and Froome did that well. But seriously Martin’s bad luck was really horrible with Porte crashing into him. An on form uninjured Martin (as he showed at Dauphine) would be a much more scary competitor than the version of Martin Froome got to face.
In any case, kudos to Froome. He raced all the guys and beat them fair and square doing everything just a touch better, which included positioning himself better on Monte du Chat. But if Porte is not “nice enough” to sit up and chew out Aru for attacking Froome at his moment of mechanical, then we have an entirely different picture. Honestly I felt that Aru should have just kept going hard. That was when he was planning to attack and it was a fluke that Froome put his hand up at that moment. A more spread out lead group descending Mont du Chat would have likely been better for everyone vs a compressed group.
All deserved, in absolute seriousness. These men are nuts in their ability to push through, well beyond what ordinary humans would put up with in their pursuit of any goal.
