Barry Roubaix?
If you’re talking Barry, the course is pretty tame/smooth gravel, except for the parts where it’s not.
Sager Rd is the one bad part, and while it differs year to year, it’s usually sandy and washed out. It would be rideable if you were skilled, but instead it’s full of people that just stop, unclip, and put a foot down with a dumb look on their face instead of continuing to move. So you’re likely to be walking that section, unless you’re in the top 50 of the field.
Assuming you’re walk/running Sager, and that it’s going to be dry, run the slickest/fastest tire you can. I range the 38mm file tread Rene Herse tires last year ant 35ish PSI and they were perfect. Schwalbe G-One RS would be a great choice too.
If it’s muddy, throw a little tread on there. But nothing too crazy.
This is Dairy Roubaix in Wisconsin
Anyone know this race?
I have done it a few times setting up for speed and finishing at the front. I have ridden it on a Madone with 32 5000tl. No issues. Most larger climbs are paved. Last year I rode a Checkpoint with 35 AS but it was wet so a few soft spots. I rode those same tires at a very dry Gravel Worlds 300.
Certainly there is a lot of pavement at this event and no chunky gravel. There is one short grass section up over an earthen dam which could get sketchy with skinny tires.
I would not run big tires at this one if you want to go fast. I might run 40 this year but they will be the new Hutch Race tire.
Its a phenomenal course. Very hard. Very beautiful. You can fill water at maybe mile ~50 at the campground. I believe thats the only opportunity. I personally don’t stop.
Awesome, thank you
Are the 40 hutch race tires, slicks, or do they have any knobby on them?
Sounds like slicks but wanted to double check
I thought I needed something for chunky gravel. There’s no guidance provided on the website
The Hutch tires are not slicks but do have a slick center strip like a Pathfinder. This is hero gravel country. Its also a lot of pavenent. Maybe in the range of 50% paved.
Great thank you. I’ll ride my Renee Herse Bon Jons and cross fingers …
