DA cranks self-destruct?

Don’t know what happened. Never seen anything like it.

Sweet pix! That happend to me at a CX race last year…

I’d imagine someone forgot the tighten the crank screws…while the bb screw is only handtight.

Lucky he didn’t freakin kill himself…look where the drive side crank is!! Holy sh*t…Batman…that could have hurt!!

That happens frequenlty with the 10-speed DA, or used to. I have seen it twice, and heard about it more. Evidently the fault of assemblers.

Whoa… tough to tell from the photo what caused this but it is quite remarkable.

Looks to me like the BB spindle sheared off, not the crank arm. What’s up with the right side? Any pics from the other angle?

Yup…never seen that with Campy!

shit, something like tat happened to me over ten years ago. cruising in the low 20’s in a paceline, went head over, landed on my knee and my head, shattered the helmet. guy behind said, “I was riding behind you and all of a sudden you were down.”

I won’t say it happens alot but it is the reason torque wrenches are starting to appear in the tool boxes of many professional road mechanics. The two pinch bolts must BOTH be tightened to the correct torque. When the left hand arm comes off, the outward motion of the drive side causes the chain to come off with catstrophic results. Old Benoit will have a chat with his mechanic this afternoon.
