DA 7800 RD Barrel adjuster replacement, easy?

Hi, this is for all you self-wrenchers. A friends DA 7800 RD barrel adjuster has broken and is hanging on by a small section. It seems the majority of the hollow thread is still inside the main mech. Is this an easy replace/repair (DIY or LBS) or is it an entire RD replacement job? Thanks in advance for your help.

Without really seeing the situation, I’d say it should be pretty easy. Certainly no need to replace the entire derailleur. They screw in and out pretty easily, and if it is hanging on or broken off, I would think that you could glue it and back it out. Get creative.

Cool, thanks. It did seem sort of silly to think that a screwed in part could not be easily replaced. Now do you know of any place he can order a matching part?

LBS should have it easily. Probably $3 or so. Another idea … if you/he/she can’t reattach the separated bits via glue or otherwise, I’d try taking a piece of plastic (think of a piece from a plastic model parts tree) or a shishkabob skewer, then shave it down so you can press it in through the center as you twist it around to push the “captured” bit out.

Any bike shop can order you the part. Should cost around $5 and take a week to get. It’s a very common part. It will include all three bits, the barrel, adjuster and spring.

I’ve had them come out very easily, but also have had them break off. If it breaks, you will need to use an easy out and a lot of penetrating oil.

Thanks, good to know. Looks like it will be best for my friend to jsut drop by the lbs and pay for parts and labor. Thanks again for all the advice.
