Looking for a good all around cassette (for my disk) for a rolling hills to flat environment (the midwest) - thinking 12-23, but don’t know that much about 10. Help?
I would go with 11-23 or 12-25. Those give you a wider range of gear than the 12-23. Some of the middle ones gears on the 12-23 are so close together that there isn’t much difference.
Anthes,
My wife runs a 12-25 on her bike. Use this information anyway you like.
I would use whatever you use for your training wheels. If not, you will have to adjust the derailure each time you switch wheels, which can be a bother.
I have yet to mount up my new disk, but I look forward to our first encounter.

Good points - all of them. Thanks. I hope your wife did not get to do a lot of winter training.
Same as usual for her. Farley has da 10 speed. He has a 12-23 on the training wheels, but put a 25 on the race wheels. He takes it into the bike shop each time he switches so that it will shift right - seems like a pain in the ass to me. I ride a 12-23 (9 speed cause I am a working stiff) and do not think I would need a 25. If your training wheels have a 25, I would stay that way without hesitation. My new cross bike has a 25 on the back and I like that extra gear.
I see that the Grosse Isle Du has been nixed. Any chance you are going to do a mans race in Gaylord? I have puked on the hills during the Starkermann. I think all of the boys are coming out to play at this one.

I will be out of the country that weekend for a wedding. If I was around, I would not miss it. Why don’t you come down to GR this weekend for Steelcase?
I might come to Gr this weekend. I have done no good rides yet, which could be a problem. How far south of GR is this race? Does it start at 9:00 or 10:00. The website says 9, but Active registration says 10? I am not sure I could get the ok for a weekend, but maybe a one day down and back trip. Leave 4:00 am and be home by 4:00 pm.
Are any of the speedy downstate guys coming to this race? Have you done it before? Is it flat or hilly?
Sorry for all of the questions.

The course is right by the airport. The run courses are closed. The bike is flat. No idea who is coming. Winner last fall went under 1:20. This event used to be in the fall (I did it last year) and has now been moved to the spring. Play it safe and go with 9am. You can check the results online.
