D/A Bar end shifter rattle?

My D/A Bar end shifter rattles and I can’t get it tight. It’s the black spacer that sits between the shifter and the screw that holds it together. Only the right one vibrates. The screw is as tight as I can get it and its set in the non friction mode. The shifter is in the correct position and works well but that black space is loose and rattles. Any help would be appreciated.

I’m not saying this is your problem, since it seems like you have it nailed down where the vibration is occurring. But my DA shifter rattles because the metal wire ring that is used to switch from friction to index vibrates against the rest. If you think this might also be your vibration, next time out, flip that ring out so it cant contact the rest, and see if it goes away.

I have yet to permanently fix this problem, I just move it a little if it rattles. Does anyone have a good solution? I’m thinking some sort of felt pad in there…

Tried that, its the black spacer. Its relatively new, so it shouldn’t be worn out.

I have the same problem and have seen it discussed on here before. There was once someone (not sure if here) who was selling some DA bar-end shifters and the description mentioned something about it having the “anti-vibration” mod. May have been a sarcastic joke but who knows. I am a pretty good wrench and do my own work but don’t have access to the parts catalogs where one might find something like this.

Mine is definately the black plastic spacer and can’t be fixed by tightening the screw. A thin gasket might take care of it…I have learned to deal with it by keeping my hands around the shifter while aero. When I hear it rattle it reminds me that I am sitting up and losing time!

Try cutting about a 2" piece of an old road inner tube and stretch it around the lower part of the shifter, I have done this for years and it keeps the rattling to a minimum.

Ghetto.

I added a drop of “Goop” to the wire ring, at each point of insertion to shifter. Stops the rattle, and you can still instantly shift to friction, should it be necessary.

“Goop” is a colorless flexible adhesive. Same stuff as “Shoe Goo”. Very useful stuff.

OK…after my ghetto comment I decided to go back and take another look at this thing. Wanted something that wouldn’t be visible because my cool points have to stay high. This is what I came up with and it seems to work pretty well.

This is for the rattle caused by the black plastic spacer with “FRIC ----> SIS” printed on it and won’t do anything for the rattle caused by the loose-loop-ring-handle-skiny-bendy-swivel-switch thing. If the later is your rattle it sounds like the Shoe Goo idea works. So, here is what I did:

Took a short piece of standard electrical tape about 1/2" long and rolled it along its long axis so it looked like an o-ring that had been cut and made straight. I then just eye-balled how long it would need to be to fit around the INSIDE of the hole that the screw recesses down inside. So, when you replace the screw the extra space inside (behind the screw) is filled with you homemade ghetto-gasket. Mine was a teeny bit too long so it overlaped on the ends but worked fine. No rattle, can’t see it, and still shifts the same!
