My entry level cateye just bit the dust. Following features required:

Current speed
Average speed
Miles (duh)
Current and average heart rate.

Cadence would be nice but not necessary. Any suggestions? Not really sure where to start.

I’ve always used Cateye. Have been a big fan of, and have never had any problems.
I currently use both the Strada Cadence (wired, no HR) & the Strada Double Wireless (no HR).

The double wireless goes through batteries fairly quickly, by that I mean with a ton of riding maybe a month or so, but easy to replace.

You can step up to the V3 if you like the brand and same features, plus HR. There are some reviews on here I think, I’m not sure how that ‘broadband’ wireless signal works.

I have heard good things about Polar, but the non user-replaceable battery concerns me.

To be honest, even though they are a good deal different in price from the Cateye, I think I’d get a Garmin next time around.
Not that I really need or want GPS, because I’m pretty conscious of my mileage when running, but because it’s all-in-one for both run & bike. Heart rate & GPS when running, then snap it on to your bike for the same plus you can get cadence and speed off of sensors.

If you don’t need the waterproof or Mac capability of the 310xt, you can get a forerunner 305 on amazon for $160 or so. I believe that’s about the same price of the Cateye v3 anyhow.
