Cyclist killed in Austin, TX, in hit and run, on 360

I had passed through that exact intersection just minutes before. Suddenly saw lots of cops on Bee Cave heading towards 360. Haven’t felt that sick in a long time.

KVUE News

One person was killed Monday in when a car hit a bicycle in West Austin.

It happened on Highway 360 at Bee Cave Road near Lake Austin.

Police said at least one car hit a woman on the bicycle.

She died on the scene.

Police say the car that hit the woman left the scene of the accident.

So far, they have not released a description of the car or the driver

What’s scary is that I know the chances are small, but my list of friends that could’ve been out riding today is not small.

I was almost out the door to ride that route, but decided to rest today. Sickening feeling.

Oh, not good!

Andrea, Tiffany, and Christina are off the top of my head. Also, any of the other girls in town that work at bike shops, maybe even Missy. Ok, I need to get back to work.

This sucks.
Austin folks, let us know as info becomes available…

Healy, is that you?

I read the post and picked up my phone to call Byrd while I was reading it was a woman. Terrible. There are great roads everywhere, but Austin is outgrowing itself…again…and I still say most of the crazy drivers are students that are lost or new to the area looking for starbucks, a party, or anything but a cyclist.

If this isn’t Healy, tell him that Hookem was checking on him. Mav. Spring '92

Scene of the accident
KVUE News
Authorities were on the scene of a deadly crash involving a cyclist Monday.

One person was killed Monday after two vehicles hit a bicycle in Southwest Austin.

It happened on Highway 360 at Bee Cave Road near Lake Austin.

Police said two vehicles hit a woman on the bicycle.

She died on the scene.

Police say the driver of the first vehicle stopped at the scene of the accident, but the second car did not stop.

They are now searching for that driver.

So far, authorities have not released a description of the car.

I live about .5 miles from there…Just went out there. About 10 Police Vehicles there now. And, of course, the TV stations.

Not sure, but it looks like the cyclist was traveling north on 360, trying to go by the offramp to Bee Caves…there are chalk outlines on the ground. Don’t care to speculate, but that’s what it looks like. Car probably was trying to exit onto Bee Caves.

Sick to my stomach right now…

Will fill everyone in if I hear anything…

(CBS 42) AUSTIN A woman riding a bike died this afternoon in West Austin.

She went out of control and a car hit her.

The car – described as small and gray with front-end damage – left the scene.

If you have information about this crash, please call police

SOB, this just makes my stomach hurt.

Hell, eveyone I know rides that route.

Eek! That is awful!

I’m a bit scared to ride 360 during the week.

The drivers in Austin are getting out of control, and I have noticed a correlation to the heat and the stupidity of drivers. I think it makes them irrational. Whenever the weather heats up for the first time, we will always have a crazy car wreck to respond to. Last night, one of our fire engines was rear ended at full speed while stopped on IH 35 to help out another motorist. The driver of the vehicle was seriously injured and his truck became blended with the back of the fire engine, but c’mon, how dumb or drunk do you have to be to swerve around cop cars and cones and then smack into a fire engine?

I take too many risks as it is when I am biking, and this is just a reminder that Austin is not as bike friendly as it once was.

I drove by this, minute(s) after it happend. The police/ambulances had not even arrived yet.

It was on the Northbound side of 360 near Bee Cave exit. It happened around 12:20 today. At the time I didn’t know she had been killed, but I feared she was from what I saw. God, I am so sorry for her and her family/friends.

I have been sick to my stomach ever since. Makes me really want to stick to my mt bike.

ASS HOLES!!! I, as well as most of you, have ridden that stretch both north and south bound. It never ceases to amaze me the STUPIDITY of people in “rushing” to get to the exit when they can damn well see the light 150m up the road is RED! WTF!!! This is sooooo sad. :frowning:

Just watched the blurb on KXAN… trek with aerobars.

reporter…said she was in the “bike lane”…hello? that is a 12" wide shoulder, at best. No bike lane there.

And I don’t know who the lady is they interviewed…but she made comments that made it sound like it was all about the cyclist’s ability. :frowning: No mention of that cars don’t see us.

I hate to have Austin added to the list of recent cyclist deaths. I ride 360 nearly every ride I do. It’s convenient to my house and the hills are great training for LP. I consider the exit at Bee Caves going southbound one of the worst parts of the ride. You’re going slow from climbing that hill and you’ve got to somehow manage to cross the width of the off ramp while cars are coming up the hill at 60+ mph.

I think my strategy will be, if I ever feel the need to ride 360 again, is to exit at both 2222 and Bee Caves and use the lights. Hate to break up the ride for that, but it might be the way to avoid those off/on ramps.

Seconded.

Was she north or south of Bee Caves? The people getting on 360 at 2222 or 2244 are generally looking over their shoulder and not looking to see what is in front of them.

From what KJ posted, and from what I could tell on the news, she was northbound, trying to get across the off ramp to Bee Caves…so the drivers should theoretically be looking straight/right.
