Cycling Peaks with running TSS

Has anyone been using a GPS to download their runs into cycling peaks to get their runnning TSS? What do you think? I am considering buying GPS unit so that I can upload my runs to get a better idea of total training stress. Any suggestions for a good GPS unit to buy for this?

Thanks,

Mike

The Garmin 205 should fill the bill. I’m using a 305 but have quit using the HRM. Downloading is as easy as downloading ones SRM.

Yes, works great.I use Garmin 305 for getting rTSS outside using the GPS and the footpod inside for treadmill. You get rTSS with footpod as well.

I estimate my TSS for swimming and manually enter it and now are finally able to track total TSS. This way you are now able to use the performance manager to track total fitness/form for all three sports separate and/or combined.

You can estimate swimming TSS using a similar pace method as used with running, but too much effort for me. After having used TSS for cycling for two years and now getting the rTSS i am pretty comfortable that I can “eduguess” my swim TSS for a workout good enough for my purposes.

AND, I do it all on a MAC!

I’m on a Mac as well, do you run it through Bootcamp?

Nope, Parallels. Bootcamp runs Windows natively but you have to either boot up in windows or OSX which I guess might be a bit a pain. Parallels runs Windows as a virtual server within OSX and has a “coherence” mode that makes it seamless between OSX and Windows programs which is more convenient. You can open programs and files in either, at the same time and even drag and drop between the two - truly the best of both worlds!

Switching to a Mac at home was one of the best home computing decisions I ever made and “heresy” as I am in charge of the IT shop for a very large organization

You can run BootCamp…or have training management and performance prediction software that runs NATIVE on the Mac. (God, I love saying that.)

However, if you need windows for other reasons, it runs there too. That is also cool, because that means you can have Topofusion and GOVSS, which is a training stress measurement and power calculation system for runners (GPS) that I invented in 2005. It’s been used by AG, elite and professional athletes around the world since then. CyclingPeaks has been trying to play catch up ever since

Topofusion is also cool because of how quickly it corrects the crappy GPS altitude data. It takes about 3 seconds in most cases…as opposed to minutes in CP.

(Don’t worry, GOVSS users…you’ll have that on the Mac too, soon enough!)

I don’t have to boot my parallels or bootcamp partitions anymore and it feels good.

I’m pretty tempted to pull the trigger on this RaceDay product of yours, it looks pretty slick, and since I just got my PowerTap this evening and am a rabid mac user…

Anyway, you mean crappy GPS altitude data like this trainer ride of mine?

It appears from this GPS data that you may be in need of a serious bike fit. You appear to be bouncing too much. Maybe your seat is too high

Seriously, though, between RaceDay and the latest version of PowerAgent, you really don’t need Parallels and CP. We’ll have a new version of RaceDay out in the next week or so as well, which will allow you to handle/view/calculate bike training stress for your power files directly. It also has some nice logging features, which was the most requested feature from our current user base. It is very streamlined.

Long live Mac!

Mike - I’ve been using it with a polar x625 and it works great. I am still playing with rTSS and learning how to apply it for better training but so far it has nice graphs to analyze specific sessions, a training cycle, etc. I don’t care much for the training zones included as I use Daniels VDOT for threshold pace or some other features. So far I only have like a month or so worth of data for some athletes and msyelf so we’ll see useful can be in the next few weeks.

can you tell me how you’re manually entering your swimming TSS? I have been putting my swim workouts in manually, but it does not allow me to enter TSS…

thanks in advance

How about Garmin accelerometer data? Do you calculate something similar to rTSS/GOVSS withOUT having GPS?

We don’t handle the Garmin accelerometer data yet. We expect to have support for the polar format (i.e. 625x and similar) within a week or two…and it works really well, especially for the GPS challeneged / people who live in areas with crummy GPS reception / people who don’t want to stand around waiting for the GPS to sync with the sattelites.
