Cycling orthotics worth it for nagging PF?

So, I guess I’m sticking with my orthotic for running as it seems to keep the plantar fasciitis at bay. I notice though that in hard efforts on the bike, my PF flares up. Is it worth getting orthotics for my cycling shoes? (they don’t fit as they’re more narrow) Also should I see a specialist about this? The podiatrist I go to doesn’t seem to have much experience in dealing with cycling shoes…

I used to have twinges of PF after hard rides when I wore the PCV sole cycling shoes. When I switched over to carbon sole shoes the PF was a non-issue. I suspect what was happening was my PCV soles flexed increasing the pronation of my feet. Stiffer sole shoes means less pronation, which means less PF.

Also, you may want to consider a pedal system that has a wider cleat/pedal interface to increase lateral stability. More stability means less pronation, which means less PF.

I replaced my shoe inserts with Superfeet’s grey insoles:

They have worked great. My PF turned out to be the new sneakers I had bought, but I continue to use the grey Superfeet’s for my cycling shoes.

I use orthotics in my cycling shoes. I have very flat feet. I bought mine off the shelf, I think they’re Superfeet.

yeah I’ve got fat flat feet and am using the grey superfeet for now. Or maybe the blue ones. I’ve noticed that in my run orthotics the heel cup definitely has a tilt and wonder if that makes a diff. This is one of the reasons I wonder about orthotics at all. I never had a problem biking before, why should I need support now. The only thing I can and will say though is that my mileage has gone up significantly and so has my effort …

Its funny that one of you mentioned the carbon soles. At one point the PF came back with a vengeance and I could barely walk around the house. The funny thing was when I decided to go for a short ride - the moment I got in the shoes, POOF no paiN! I could walk! (sort of) so I completely agree the soles make a HUGE difference.

I’m also currently on shimano-SLs, a lot wider than the speedplays I had before.

specialized makes some shoes with a fairly good arch in them and they have some post to them so that may help your problems…I love mine and that means I only need one pair of ridiculously expensive orthotics which, Praise God, my insurance paid for.
