Hey all,
Chicagoan excited for warmer cycling weather in clearwater/st petersburg area (at madeira beach) through the 5th here. Does anyone know of any clubs or group rides in the area? I checked out the st petes mad dogs and hope to get a few rides in with them. Any mad dogs on here know if they swim this time of year as well? Thanks.
Z
Just be careful. My parents used to live in Madeira Beach (now in Tampa). I basically feared for my life everytime I rode down there. Running was only marginally safer. 2 years ago, a couple from my Church (roadies) were riding with the St. Pete Madogs (great tri club BTW) when a car plowed in their group, killing a couple and injurying lots more. His bike was trashed, but he skated across the hood and was not hurt. I just run and swim (well, not really this time of year, but it is tolerable in a full suit with booties and cap) there.
Never mind i will read the whole post next time.
Yes, I hear there’s a huge group ride about mid November. A couple thousand riders. I think they call it 70.3 World Championship.
Sorry, couldn’t resist. Maddogs are your best bet to find a group ride. And if your in Tampa, USF or old GTE tech park north of town are your best bet.
rroof, please know your facts, the ride that was three years ago in St. Pete in which a guy that was under the inflluence of too many prescription drugs crossed a double yellow line and plowed over appox 14 riders head on which made national news. There was nobody killed! That is a false statement. I was in the group, so please know your facts before you start stating things. It was a freak unusual thing, which could have happened anywhere USA. There are organized groups rides everyday year round (because of the great weather & large triathlete/cycling population) in the St, Pete area near North Shore pool and in the Clearwater area. Check out the St. Pete Mad Dogs website. There are tons of rides in the area.
Yes, check around the north shore pool in st pete . 7am and another at 8am.we also have the pinellas trail goes for 40+ mi (no cars allowed)
