Cycling bigger than golf in europe?

just curious.

golf - 4 letters, cycling = 7, so this makes cycling bigger than golf
.

in France, Italy, Spain etc. certainly…England, northern and Eastern Europe, I’d think so but am not sure.

Gee and the Europeans are not all fat - go figure.

Aloha,

Larry
.

I was gonna say… Based on the number of slender Europeans I’d say cycling and tri were much bigger than golf. Francois makes a good point about the regional differences, too.

Tri bigger than golf, probably not. Cycling bigger than golf, probably. I live in Switzerland and I would definately say cycling in bigger than golf. At least where I live.

definitely.

Golf ??? What the hell is that ?

P.S. I live in Vevey, on the swiss/vaud Riviera.

Golf is bigger than cycling in the UK. Sadly.

In General :

1/ Football

2/ Cycling

3/ Basketball

4/ ‘National sports’

Great Britain + France =Rugby

Netherlands = Hockey + Ice skating

Belgium = Cyclocross + Motorcross

Winter sports = Scandinavia + Germany

Golf is even a smaller sport than Gymnastics, swimming, athletics, F1, etc…

I said : ‘in general’

GB: don’t forget cricket.

Most sports trump golf in Europe due to the high expense. Real estate is at a premium in most of Europe and golf courses take so much land that isn’t readily available. When I was in Switzerland I was amazed at how much of the grass in medians on the highways and access ramps is cut and baled for hay. The mountainsides are full of cattle and grass until they’re so steep they can’t support anything anymore. They use every inch of space they have…golf isn’t part of that use.

Yeah, roger that. Just up the street (Stuttgart Germany) there is a part of an old golf course which is now a local park. About 8 weeks ago I noticed a bunch of sheep, complete with sheepherder and dog, eating the grass. Then yesterday I saw that the whole park had been mowed and there were huge round bales of hay sitting there!

Cycling here rocks. Bike paths/trails everywhere. And a very low percentage of fat people. Hmmm…

In sweden no, defenitly not.

And I’ve never heard the two words Netherlands and Hockey mentioned in the same sentence before. Ever.

Or should that be “I suck at golf” - either way, give me two wheels over clubs any day.

In Norway? Not at all.

Depends on what you meen by “bigger than”, but if you meen people participating in the sport, I would guess it is

  1. Football
  2. handball
  3. Volleyball
  4. x-country skiing

and then golf somewhere down on that list

and cycling further down

and triathlon somewhere near the bottom of that list. Toghether with rugby, american football, baseball.

If you meen media coverage it is
1.Football
2.Football
3.Football

I didn’t mean ice hockey, you eskimo ;-). I meant field hockey, on grass. Pretty popular over there.

Sorry my bad. Thought it sounded wrong.
