how do you guys lengthen the lifetime of your cycling shorts? ive been told not to put them in the dryer so i dont anymore but besides that i have no idea. put them in the wash? cold water? soap? what should i do?
cold water. And a sweater bag when using the washing machine
I just use the delicate cycle with cold water and hang them up to dry. Mine have lasted for years and they still smell good when I first put them on.

Exactly. And no fabric softener.
In the sink with woolite or dreft in cold water. Try to avoid the washer/dryer (although gentle cycle might be okay) and do not ring them out after rinsing. Hang dry inside out and out of direct sunlight.

Inside out on gentle cycle. Hang dry inside out. I use a non detergent soap. VERY little.
Also… Don’t swim in them, chlorine will kill them or take a hot shower in them…
I wash mine out in the shower with some soap after the ride to get rid of the bacteria/sweat, and then throw them into the laundry bin once they are dry.
I just wash them with my normal colored load, and let them air dry (no dryer cycle).
am i the only person here who puts bibs in the dryer with the rest of my clothes?
i did that with my tri shorts for a lil while when i lost my speedo. RIP
Wash every other ride on delicate cycle. Hang to dry. In between washing, I rinse out in the shower with soap and water. I never put them in the dryer as the tags say not to.

Emilio said not to use fabric softener on cycling clothing or put them in the dryer. That’s a good enough answer for me. He knows a hell of a lot more about the subject than I do.
I wash my kit with clothes that I don’t care about- like crappy t shirts and boxers. If I’m covered in road grit from riding in the pouring rain…I don’t want that crap all over my good clothes!
I also dry my cycling stuff on low. Racing/training in a pack of guys with road spray necessitates new clothes alot faster than the dryer does.

I work for Pearl Izumi and we tell folks that you want to use a non-scented, non-fabric softening detergent in a cold wash / gentle cycle. I use All brand detergent - the free and clear version. Also, a little goes a long way in terms of how much detergent to use. I probably use 1/2 - 3/4 of the recommended dose for a full load.
You CAN use a tumble dry at low speed and low heat though I normally suggest you hang dry. The gear should typically be dry in less than 3 hours via hang drying.

Whew. I panicked a bit after reading the first sentence, then finally composed myself long enough to read the rest.
Ask my wife! Men don’t to laundry!
PS Don’t send her this link, I don’t want to sleep on the sofa for a week = ]
Hang on chair as I walk in the door . . . next day they are in my cloths stack folded and clean . . .(pink)
